TEA will review the credentials and experience of respondents and create a list of Approved Service Providers eligible to provide services to districts 9/18/7 participating in the pilotTASM program. Service Provider Activities As established in statute, service provider coaching and professional development activities may include the following: classes to teachers on effective mathematics instruction providing tutoring or mentoring to teachers regarding effective mathematics instruction providing incentives to teachers to participate in the program engaging in other activities likely to improve mathematics instruction TASM 9/18/7 Approved Service Providers Service providers may include: Texas Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (T-STEM) academies and centers Regional education service centers Institutions of higher education TASM 9/18/7 Private organizations Step One: Request for Qualifications (RFQ) The RFQ will identify highly qualified service providers who can: Demonstrate significant past effectiveness in improving math instruction Demonstrate prior success working with students identified as at risk of dropping out of school TASM 9/18/7 Step Two: RFA (Request for Application) An RFA will be released in early Spring of 2008 Eligible districts/campuses will apply for grant funds to participate in the pilot program Grant recipients will then select a provider from the list generated in response to the RFQ process and negotiate a contract with TASM 9/18/7 the provider directly Chris Caesar Program Manager Texas High School Project Texas Education Agency phone: (512) 936-6434| fax: (512) 463-5337 Chris.caesar@tea.state.tx.us “All Texas students will graduate high school ready for college and career success and prepared to be contributing members of the TASM 9/18/7 community” Texas Math Diagnostic System (TMDS) New items aligned to TEKS are currently being developed Two phase review process Online review by educators across state 1st in person educator committee review held in Austin Sept 10 -12 TASM 9/18/7 Texas Math Diagnostic System (TMDS) November 2007 Existing items will be removed from databank First half of items will be placed in databank Will send notice to TASM listserv Student ID change local (district-generated) student ID numbers Refer to notice sent to TASM listserv on 9/4/7 TASM 9/18/7 Texas Math Diagnostic System (TMDS) 2nd in person Educator review committee Last batch of items October 10 – 12 (tentative) Wed thru Fri Austin Reviewers needed 3-5, 6-8, Geometry, Algebra I and II Contact Erika Pierce Erika.pierce@tea.state.tx.us Subject line: TMDS Review TASM 9/18/7 Proclamation 05: Elementary Math Fully Funded 2007-2008: Adoption Year for K-5 Nov 2007: SBOE scheduled to vote on list of conforming and nonconforming textbooks 2008-2009: Textbooks scheduled to be in classrooms TASM 9/18/7 Regional Collaboratives for Excellence in Teaching Math TEA, in partnership with the UT Austin office of Texas Regional Collaboratives for Excellence in Mathematics issued 22 Math Collaboratives grant awards for 2007-2008. A TELPAS writing collection must be submitted for every LEP student in grades 2 through 12, in the state of Texas. These collections are rated by trained and qualified TELPAS raters these ratings are submitted to the state for federal accountability purposes. TASM 9/18/7 Who is Impacted by TELPAS writing? Any teacher who teaches a LEP student in an academic content area may be required (by local decision) to submit appropriate samples of student writing for the LEP students they serve. TASM 9/18/7 Required TELPAS Samples At least 5 total samples are required in each collection. In each collection there must be - at least 1 narrative about a past event - at least 2 writing samples from math, science, or social studies TASM 9/18/7 TELPAS Writing Activities TELPAS writing samples should be taken from authentic classroom activities. TASM 9/18/7 Extended, Connected Writing The writing samples should show the ability of students to connect ideas and express themselves in English in an extended way. Brief writing samples should not be placed in the collections of students who are capable of writing in an extended, connected way in English.* * It is expected that the limited English of beginning and early intermediate students will cause some TASM 9/18/7writing to be brief. Suggestions for Focused Writing Assignments in Math Class Explanations of problem solving steps Student created word problems Comparisons between mathematical processes Application of mathematical processes Mathematical journal writing TASM 9/18/7 Writing in Math Class All students benefit from regular focus on language development in all content areas All students need regular practice with content specific vocabulary and language structures Language production, such as writing, in the content areas helps students to internalize the content as well as practice the content specific language TASM 9/18/7 TELPAS Writing Assignments Writing in math, science, and social studies should not just happen for TELPAS or be an “extra assignment” for ELLs. TASM 9/18/7 Collection Verification Verifiers of TELPAS writing collections are designated by local decision. All writing collections must be verified by a trained TELPAS writing collection verifier. Questions about how, and to whom writing samples must be submitted should be directed to campus testing coordinators. TASM 9/18/7 February 1, 2008 Writing assigned on or after February 1, 2008, may be considered. Writing samples may continue to be gathered until the date designated by the district to assign the ratings.
