Writing your Character Analysis

Step One
 Choose your character
 Make it a good one
 Someone who has changed over the course of the story
or
 Someone who has remained true to themselves
Step Two:
 Find three adjectives to describe your character
 Find synonyms for each of your chosen adjectives

The more you have to pull information from – the better.
Step Three
 Chart it out

Step Four
 For each adjective(synonym) find quotes (include page
numbers) that illustrate how they are.
 For each adjective, find another character who
describes your character in the same fashion
 And so on and so on.

Step Five
 Describe the situation in which your character lives
 Is there something they need to overcome?
 Are they treated fairly?
 Do they treat others fairly?
 In other words – did they suffer from discrimination or
did they heap discrimination on others? The difference
between Jack and Piggy or Boxer and Napoleon.
How to write it
What is expected from it
Novel Summary
 Revisit the parts of plot and relate information:
 Plot the sequence of events that create a story
 Exposition: background information
 Conflict: the issue to be addressed


Internal: man vs. self
External: man vs. man; man vs. nature; man vs. society
 Complication – as it relates to the events of plot
 Rising action
 Climax
 Falling Action
 Resolution/ denouement
Summary continued
 Focus specifically on the social injustice or
discrimination
 Things that were wrong
 Characters that were treated badly or very well
 The change the characters go through
 Don’t find a reason for these things to have happened,
just explain that they did happen based upon a level of
unfairness
 Yes – I want and expect you to use quotes to “enhance”
the paper.
 Group topics together – for example I would put the
exposition and conflicts together. “Argument erupt
between various character creating dissention and
ongoing tumoil.”
 Then Complication and Rising action – your choice as to
what you believe they are
 Climax and falling action
 Resolution is on its own
 Don’t begin by trying to write the introduction –
 We will do thatin class together
 There is a certain format and tone I want you to use
 Begin typing your first line:
 After suffering through years of maltreatment and
abuse, the animals are rallied to revolution when they
hear Old Major, the most respected animal on the farm,
speak of his dream for the future. Now you can pick it
up from there. Do try to change things around a bit.
 In an effort to keep the future generation safe, the boys
were evacuated from war-torn London but found
themselves on a deserted island fighting for survival
from an unexpected enemy; each other.
Get the BASICS DONE!
 I will help you with the introduction, conclusion and
segway to research opening.

Promise, promise!!
Introduction
 Title of Novel, author
 One or two sentence synopsis of the novel; try to utilize
the term social injustice or discrimination
 “It tells the story of…”
 “The novel focuses on…”
 “revolves around”
 “centers on”
 Social injustice, as defined by Merriam –Webster’s
School Dictionary is defined as, “
 Discrimination, as defined by Merriam-Webster's School
Dictionary is defined as, “
Choose one term to define
 Then you are going to discuss and reference some of
the ways the characters experienced discrimination:
 The animals, hopeful for a brighter future, worked
happily until the rules governing them began to
change.
Or
 The boys, once a cohesive group began a slow
degeneration process where they lost their civil
behavior and began to act cruelly towards one another.
You will need to have three BIG IDEAS here, ones that
you will discuss in your summary.
How to cite
Roger began to act out in little ways, “Roger led
the way straight through the castles, kicking them
over” (Orwell, pg. 60) and then began to feel
emboldened when he was not corrected for his
behavior.
Parenthetical citations: in text citations that reference
author and page where quote is found. The author’s
name and work should be listed in the Bibliography.
Opening to Research
Though acts of cruelty and retribution make for an
exciting fictional reading experience, history is fraught
with examples of social injustice. One of the most
turbulent time periods in American History is the Civil
Rights Movement.
Or
Social injustice and discrimination, though entertaining on
a literary level are also quite common in society. Examples
range from the Inquisition from centuries ago to the crisis
in the Ukraine in present time.
