Mathers and Criterion Houses will be closed on Thursday 22 and Friday 23 October 2015 for the Royal Hobart Show holiday. The team at Mathers House warmly welcomes a new staff member. Bob Broughton joins us at Mathers House to support the City of Hobart’s Positive Ageing programs. We believe he makes a wonderful addition to our team. Bob has recently made a transition from library and archives based work in the Council’s Corporate Services to work with us in Community Development. Bob started out in aged care after university, and has always enjoyed community work, mostly as a volunteer in arts based programs. Bob lives in New Town and he and his wife have a spoodle, which is like their human child as their children have grown up and moved out. Bob’s outside interests are military history, touring bikes, art and several sorts of antiques. Gunpowder in Van Diemen’s Land Bob Broughton will show the fascinating and lively history of gunpowder in Tasmanian history and why Tasmania was different to every other colony. Gunpowder was the primary material to gain a foothold from the original owners, and then it seemed essential to keep the French and then the Russians from invading Tasmania. Bob will be dressed in an original uniform of the Southern Tasmanian Volunteer Artillery. One afternoon session of 1.5 hours. The Hobart Older Persons’ Reference Group is partnering with St John’s Community Garden Inc to host a concert in the Orchard, St Johns Avenue (across from the Church). This “Meet the TSO” will feature a visit from three members of the TSO, Monica Naselow - violin, William Newbery - viola, Brett Rutherford - cello. The musicians will share their skills, stories and music. Monica is also a member of the Australian World Orchestra and recently performed in Sydney and Melbourne under the baton of British conductor, Sir Simon Rattle. This course is for six weeks and involves strategies to enhance thinking and memory skills. Tony Rayner, Hobart historian and author brings alive the history of the the public houses, taverns and brothels of Old Hobart in one of his tours of pubs, churches and famous buildings. These accessible walking tours take 1¾ hours and require only sturdy footwear, a hat, a jacket and a thirst for stirring historic tales of another time. Traditional cushion art - Suffolk Puffs Have you got an old cushion you want to update into a very pretty spring cushion for your home? Suffolk Puffs are a traditional English rural decoration for cushions and textiles.
