The Kiss that Missed by David Melling briefly clarifying the following words as
needed comprehension: rattle, royal, mounted, galloped, nostrils
Day 2- Introduce Tier 2 Vocabulary Words using the following steps:
1. Say the word and show the written word on a card or write it on the board.
2. Tell the students the word in the context of the story. “In the story…”
3. Provide a student-friendly definition.
4. Talk about the word in an additional context beyond the one used in the story.
5. Give students opportunities to interact with the word. (Partners discuss, hand gestures, act out,
etc. as appropriate)
Day 2 (continued)Loyal pg 5 - In the story, the king had a quick word with his loyal knight. Loyal means you’re always supporting
your friends.
Example: She was loyal to her best friend.
If I say something that is loyal say, “loyal”. If it is not loyal say nothing
 I helped my friend feel better. (loyal)
 The boy was lying to his friend.
 The dog was always there for his master. (loyal)
 Her friends left her alone when she was sad.
Note: Consider introducing the word disloyal to students if they are ready. dis=not
Pursuit pg 7: – In the story the king galloped off in hot pursuit until they came to the wild wood. If you are in
pursuit you are chasing something.
Example: The cat was in pursuit of the mouse.
If I say something that means pursuit give me a thumbs up and say pursuit:
 The lion ran after the zebra. (pursuit)
 They played jump rope at recess.
 The dog chased the cat down the road. (pursuit)
Partner chat: What is something you might pursue at recess? Encourage students to say “I might
pursue….”(examples could include- a ball over the fence, a friend while playing tag, a paper blowing in the
wind).
Day 2 (continued)Leered pg 18– In the story it said a dragon leered greedily at them. If you leered at someone you looked at them
with a sideways sneer. (See attached picture to show students.)
Example: The dog leered at the cat.
 If I say something where you think someone is leering give thumbs up. If not give thumbs down.
o The monster gave a mean look to the little boy! (leered)
o The teacher smiled at her class.
o The boy looked angrily at the bad grade on his test. (leered)
o The friends were happy to see each other.
Greedily pg 18– In the story it said the dragon leered greedily at them. To be greedy means to be selfish want so
if you are doing something greedily then you are acting selfishly.
Example : The bear greedily ate all at the fish and did not share any with its cub.
For each example either say “greedy” or “not greedy”
 The girl ate all the cookies and did not share.
 The girl shared her cake with her friend.
 The mother dog fed her puppies.
 The girl grabbed all the crayons in the basket to color her picture. (greedily)
Extension: Students discuss how to change each scenario from greedy to not greedy.
lumbered pg 21– In the story the dragon lumbered after them. If you lumber you move in a heavy clumsy way.
Example : The monster lumbered after the people in the village.
If I say something that means lumbered say lumbered.
 The cat scurried across the floor.
 The boy rode his bike to school.
 The dinosaur walked clumsily to catch his food. (lumbered)
 The giant walked slowly and unsteady after the people in the town. (lumbered)

 The ___________ was in pursuit of the __________ because…
