Remember to show all your calculations and include therefore statements at the end. Yes, Belal, you
can write directly on this page.
1. The Dalewood Middle School Student Council wants to purchase a large statue of Mr. DiFelice to
enhance the look of the outside of the school. They negotiated a total cost of $1274 with a local artist
to carve the statue out of soap stone. The students at Dalewood raised $243.14 with pizza orders,
$87.92 from car washes, and $141.24 from an interpretive dance celebratory assembly. How much
more do they have to raise to purchase the DiFelice statue?
2. Ms. Coburn drove her Harley 546km in 6 hours.
a) At that rate, how far did she drive in one hour?
b) At that rate, how far did she drive in four hours?
3. Talar used bricks and wood to make a shelf unit for under the window in her bedroom. She bought 4
lengths of wood for $7.25 each and 16 bricks for $1.89 each. The store was having a “Don’t Tell The
Government! No Taxes At All!!” sale. How much change did Talar receive if she gave the cashier three
$20.00 bills?
4. Last year, there were three grade 8 classes at Dalewood and one split 7/8 class. 81 had 32 students,
82 had 33 students, F8 had 36 students and 7/8 has 24 students in total but 5 of those students are in
grade 7.
a) How many grade 8 students were there in total at Dalewood last year?
b) If each grade 8 student donated $20.15 to the school so the school could buy a large hot tub (like Ned
always wanted), how much money would the school have?
c) How much more money would the students have to donate each in order to have enough to buy the
hot tub if the hot tub cost $3999.00 (price includes taxes).
5. Muntakim wanted to get a new set of wheels for his skateboard so he could get home quicker from
school to start his homework. The new Superwheels cost $470.80 (they come with a free cape). The
price included taxes. Muntakim earned $4.25/hour moving computers. Muntakim’s parents told him
they would match his earnings (so if Muntakim earned $8.00, his parents would give him $8.00 too).
How many hours would Muntakim have to work to earn the money for the Superwheels?
6. A submarine uses SONAR to detect objects under the water. A sound signal is transmitted from the
submarine. When the sound strikes an object it is reflected back to the submarine. Sound waves travel
at 1609 m/s in sea water.
a) If the sound signal returns to a submarine 8 seconds after transmission, how far is the object from
the submarine?
b) How far is an object from a submarine if a sound signal returns after 5.4 seconds?
7. Mrs. Pratt bought 32 tickets for a movie for her class to see. If the total bill was $56, how much was
each ticket?
8. Sam is a waiter. He earned $83.01 for his work for 14 hours. The money he earned included tips. If
Sam made $5.15 per hour, how much money did he make from tips?
9. Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez, and Jaden Smith are taking some off from their tours to go on a canoe
trip. Because they have been on tour for so long, they have not been keeping up with their math
homework. As a result, they are not very good at math. They need help finding some information
about their journey. Justy (as Selena calls him) and Sel-Sel (as Justin calls her) will be traveling the
Indigo River and the Colvin River, but Jaden only travelled the Colvin (because he only is “ft.” on this
trip). The Indigo River is 4 783.4 metres long. The Colvin River is 14 394.82 metres long.
a) How much longer is the Colvin River than the Indigo River?
b) What is the total distance Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez, and Jaden Smith travelled?
10. Ms. Dockrill loves Lucky Charms – she also loves the cereal. She loves that sugary breakfast treat
so much that she bought 18 boxes and paid $43.02 for all of them. What is the cost of each box?
