6th Grade -World Geography and Culture
Ms. Atkinson & Mrs. Seyferth
Course Description:
This course is designed to introduce students to geography and cultures around the world in alignment with the Michigan Department of Education
sixth grade content expectations, and targets the Common Core standards. Within this course, students will investigate unique aspects of global societies
and gain an understanding of their spatial environment.
Course Outline:
The course will focus on the five themes of geography; location, place, regions, movement and human-environment interaction. We will begin our
exploration by examining our local environment and expand outward to a global perspective, finishing with a culminating project.
Textbook:
Exploring Our World: People, Places, and Culture, 2008.
Materials:
The following materials must be brought every day to class
Three ring binder with dividers and college ruled loose leaf paper used only for this class
Text book
Pencil/pen
6 packs of 3x5 index cards and box to hold them
Student planner/calendar
Optional Items : markers, ruler, highlighters
Requested donations: Poster board, large (poster size) post it notes, page tabs, sticky notes, markers, Clorox Wipes, tissue
Classroom Behavior Expectations:
Just as our nation is founded on individual rights, justice, and checks and balances so too is our classroom. Students will be expected to implore the core
democratic values as citizens within our classroom society. Together we will create a classroom contract that all students will sign and be held
accountable to. Our foundations will be…
▫
Respect the teacher and classmates right to learn
▫
Respect the materials, property and space provided
▫
Carry yourself in respectable manner as determined by the greater good

▫
Homework that supports and enhances the concepts we are learning within our classroom will be given regularly. It is expected that all students complete homework on time and in an
acceptable manner. Length of time allowed for assignments will vary.
Make-Up Work:
Students with an excused absence will be allowed one day per day absent to complete make-up work.
It is the student’s responsibility to request make up work from the teacher before or after class, and in a timely manner.
Late work is as follows:
▫
Late one day – reduction of 50%
▫
Late two days – Zero points
Tardy Policy
Any student who is late ( 3 ) or more times will be assigned SATURDAY SCHOOL by administration. Do not be late to class. An unexcused absent will be issued to any student that is 10 minutes
late to class.
Grading:
My grading is based on a cumulative system. Possible points divided by points earned will determine your grade.

Pollinate Peace in the World
• The Pollination Project, in partnership with the Institute for Humane
Education, is offering up to 20 grants in fall 2013 for educators to create
projects that support their students in making a positive difference in the
world. The institute is seeking educators who are committed to bringing
forward a just, peaceful and healthy world through projects that directly
promote environmental stewardship, social justice, human rights or animal
protection. Applications will be accepted from any educator, at any level
(preschool through postgraduate), anywhere in the world, with priority
given to educators working in traditionally underserved communities. The
award includes $1,000 from the Pollination Project to launch or expand a
social change project in your school; paid tuition in the Institute for
Humane Education’s six-week online course “Teaching for a Positive
Future” (CEUs available in most states); and peer support from likeminded
educators.
