Kamran posted: i heard in tech-ed there is no such thing as heartbeat network.
Symon Perriman replied publicly: The heartbeat is more lightweight in 2012 - since we scaled up to 64 nodes we do
not heartbeat in a 'mesh' topology. It is a best practice to have a dedicated heartbeat network, but not required. Here is
what you need to think about - imagine if you put so much traffic through a network that it was fully saturated and the
heartbeats could not go through - then you would have a false failover. Make sure heartbeat traffic can go through.

Symon Perriman replied publicly: You will have downtime. You have to evict a node and do a clean install to 2012. You
now have 2x 1-node clusters. You then run the Cluster Migration Wizard which moves and remaps your VMs and other
resources (there is downtime). Then start the VMs on your new cluster. Clean install on the last node and join it to your

Symon Perriman replied publicly: If you have SCVMM, then you can make this experience better. There are a few ways
to go... for example, you could clone the VM and redeploy it to a standalone 2012 host (some downtime). Then upgrade
your cluster to 2012. Then you can do a 'shared nothing' live migration to move it back to the cluster with no downtime.
brantn posted: So if the OSs have to be the same in a cluster what happens if you take a cluster with two core machines

Symon Perriman replied publicly: It will work in this version. Previously it wasn't supported to mix core/non-core since
several roles (like SQL) were not supported on Core. It all works together in this version. However an easier solution may
be just to manage the entire cluster remotely with a GUI and keep every node at Core so they are consistent.
