Making Word Meaning Inferences in a Text
Read the following poem and use the language choices to create images
in your mind. How do you envision this playing out? What is the tone?
* Think about each
word’s connotation
and the overall tone
of the poem and
draw the images in
your mind on a
separate sheet of
paper. Be as
descriptive as
possible in your
drawings; it will help
you interpret the
poet’s purpose and
tone.
Future
I’m coming closer and closer to the date,
Feeling overwhelmed at its imminence…
It interferes with my concentration,
My intracranial thoughts impossible to stop.
I’m incapable of focusing for more than an intermittent stretch.
It seems completely illogical to worry about my future, but here I am,
Ultra-terrified at this new development in my life:
Interacting with an influx of new people; developing my interpersonal skills
I know I can’t stay indecisive long; I don’t have the time.
