We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us
understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we
are in him who is true—even in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the
true God and eternal life.

Matthew 8:23-27
Then he got into the boat and his
disciples followed him. Without warning,
a furious storm came up on the lake, so
that the waves swept over the boat. But
Jesus was sleeping. The disciples went
and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us!
We’re going to drown!” He replied,
“You of little faith, why are you so
afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the
winds and the waves, and it was
completely calm. The men were amazed
and asked, “What kind of man is this?
Even the winds and the waves obey
him!”
How do we know that Jesus is both God and man?
John 11:38-44
Jesus, once more deeply moved, came to the tomb. It
was a cave with a stone laid across the entrance. “Take
away the stone,” he said. “But, Lord,” said Martha, the
sister of the dead man, “by this time there is a bad odor,
for he has been there four days.” Then Jesus said, “Did I
not tell you that if you believed, you would see the
glory of God?” So they took away the stone. Then Jesus
looked up and said, “Father, I thank you that you have
heard me. I knew that you always hear me, but I said
this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they
may believe that you sent me.” When he had said this,
Jesus called in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” The
dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with
strips of linen, and a cloth around his face. Jesus said to
them, “Take off the grave clothes and let him go.”

Actions of God & man
Key Point #1
Jesus is both God and man
because the Bible calls him
both, tells us he has the
characteristics of both, and tells
us that he does the things that
both do.
How did Jesus become true man and true God
together in one person?
Matthew 1:20-23
But after he had considered
this, an angel of the Lord
appeared to him in a dream
and said, “Joseph son of
David, do not be afraid to
take Mary home as your
wife, because what is
conceived in her is from the
Holy Spirit. “The virgin will
be with child and will give
birth to a son, and they will
call him Immanuel”—which
means, “God with us.”

One reason Jesus became the
God-man was so he could be
subject to God’s law and
keep it for us.
What is a second reason Jesus became both
God and man in one person?
Hebrews 2:14
Since the children have
flesh and blood, he too
shared in their humanity
so that by his death he
might destroy him who
holds the power of
death—that is, the devil—
So he
could die

became both God and
man was so that he could
die and by his death pay
for the sins of the world.
Discuss: Many people who call
themselves Christians deny that Jesus
was born of a virgin. Go back through
our lesson for today, and think about
the part Jesus’ virgin birth plays in
God’s plan to save us from sin. Then
answer this question: Is the doctrine of
the virgin birth an important truth to
believe? Why or why not?
Agree or Disagree?
God died.
Luther once said, “The devil would be able to
put a lot of doubt about salvation in our minds
when we are close to dying if he could come
to us and say, “Jesus can’t be your Savior
because he is only a man!” or “Jesus can’t be
your Savior because he is only God!”
How would Satan be able to put a lot of doubt
about our salvation in our minds if he could
say either of those things to us when we are
near death?

together by his virgin birth in
