Understanding the Spirit World
Dr. Gary L. Royer
Problems in Teaching on Spiritual
Warfare
• Too controversial: Can Christians be
possessed, oppressed, depressed?
• Uncertain Expectations: vomit up snakes and
frogs, foaming at the mouth and other
manifestations OR too quiet to be real!
• Semantics: demonization (not Demonpossession), possessed, oppressed,
tormented, tempted,
• Spirit of fear, doubt, “formality” “overeating”
• Spirit of generosity, wisdom, restoration
• Most of the time, the spirit of fear
has to do
with the spirit of a human being, not of the outside world.
Ephesians 1: 1-3
(References are NIV unless stated otherwise.)
• 1Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of
God, to the saints in Ephesus, the faithful in
Christ Jesus:
• 2Grace and peace to you from God our Father
and the Lord Jesus Christ.
• 3Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord
Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the
heavenly realms (world of spirits) with every
spiritual blessing in Christ.m

For our struggle is not against flesh and
blood, but against the rulers, against the
authorities, against the powers of this dark
world and against the spiritual forces of
evil in the heavenly realms. For this reason,
ever since I heard about your faith in the
Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints,
I have not stopped giving thanks for you,
remembering you in my prayers.

Ephesians 1: 17-19
• I keep asking that the God of our Lord
Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give
you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so
that you may know him better. I pray also
that the the eyes of your heart may be
enlightened in order that you may know
the hope to which he has called you, the
riches of his glorious inheritance in the

Ephesians 1: 19-21
• That power is like the working of his
mighty strength, which he exerted in
Christ when he raised him from the dead
and seated him at his right hand in the
heavenly realms, far above all rule and
authority, power and dominion, and
every title that can be given, not only in
the present age but also in the one to
come.
2 Corinthians 3: 13-15
• We are not like Moses, who would put a veil
over his face to keep the Israelites from
gazing at it while the radiance was fading
away. But their minds were made dull, for to
this day the same veil remains when the old
covenant is read. It has not been removed,
because only in Christ is it taken away. Even
to this day when Moses is read, a veil covers
their hearts. But whenever anyone turns to
the Lord, the veil is taken away.
• It’s not a battle of with the natural world, but of the spirit
world. You can win the battle, but not the war

The Realm of Angels
The Realm of Angels
1. Cherubim
The word cherub (cherubim is the Hebrew
masculine plural) is a word borrowed from the Assyrian kirubu,
from karâbu, "to be near", hence it means near ones, familiars, personal
servants, bodyguards, courtiers. It was commonly used of those
heavenly spirits, who closely surrounded the Majesty of God and paid
Him intimate service
(http://www.oration.com/~mm9n/articles/cherub/index.htm)
The first mention of cherubs is in Gen. 3:24, where the figure is not
described, but their office was, with a flaming sword, to keep or guard
the way of the tree of life.
The Realm of Angels
1. Cherubim
The two cherubs which Moses was commanded to make at
the ends of the Mercy seat, were to be of beaten work of
gold; and their wings were to extend over the Mercy seat,
their faces towards each other, and between them was the
residence of the Deity. Ex. 15. The cherubs, in Ezekiel's
vision, had each four heads or faces, the hands of a man
and wings. The four faces were, the face of a bull, that of a
man, that of a lion, and that of an eagle. They had the
likeness of a man. Ezek. 4, and 10. In 2 Sam. 22:11, and
Psalm 18. (http://av1611.com/kjbp/kjvdictionary/cherub.html)

Seraphim
• Isaiah 6
• English Standard Version (ESV)
• Isaiah's Vision of the Lord
• 6 In the year that King Uzziah died I saw the Lord sitting upon a
throne, high and lifted up; and the train of his robe filled the temple. 2
Above him stood the seraphim. Each had six wings: with two he
covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he
flew. 3 And one called to another and said:
• “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts;
• the whole earth is full of his glory!”
The Realm of Angels

The Realm of Angels
• Michael the Archangel
• Michael means-Who is like God?
• He and Gabriel are the only angels mentioned by
name. Michael is the only one mentioned as the
Archangel which means chief or in charge in
Greek. Gabriel means messenger. Michael is only
mentioned twice as the Archangel in the Bible; 1
Thessalonians 4:16 and Jude 1:9. But he is
mentioned by the name Michael in the old and

his angels concerning you to guard you in all
your ways.12 On their hands they will bear you
up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.
The Realm of Angels
• Paul in 1 Corinthians 4:9 We are being watched
by the Angels.
• For I think that God has exhibited us apostles as
last of all, like men sentenced to death, because
we have become a spectacle to the world, to
angels, and to men.
The Realm of Angels
Daniel 6:22 God sent his angel and shut the lions
mouths, when Daniel was thrown in the lions den.
Act 5 19 But during the night an angel of the
Lord opened the prison doors and brought them
out, and said,20 “Go and stand in the temple and
speak to the people all the words of this Life.”
The Realm of Angels
Two places in the Bible that it talks about there
being a guardian angel.
1. Acts 12 14 Recognizing Peter's voice, in her joy
she did not open the gate but ran in and reported
that Peter was standing at the gate. 15 They said to
her, “You are out of your mind.” But she kept
insisting that it was so, and they kept saying, “It
is his angel!”
The Realm of Angels
2. Matthew 18:10 “See that you do not despise one
of these little ones. For I tell you that in heaven
their angels always see the face of my Father who

The Realm of Angels
Psalm 34:7
The angel of the LORD encamps around those who
fear him, and delivers them.

The Realm of Angels
• Angels are more powerful than humans
because they are not confined to a physical
body.
• They were created to serve God.
•
Hebrews 1:7:
•
In speaking of the angels he says,
"He makes his angels winds,
his servants flames of fire.“
The Realm of Angels
• They are assigned to minister to believers.
•
Hebrews 1: 14
•
Are not all angels ministering
spirits sent to serve those who will
inherit salvation?
The Realm of Angels
• All angels were created good because God
creates no evil; however one-third of the
angels followed Lucifer in his rebellion.
• Satan is a created being who chose to do
evil and was cast from Heaven.
•
Revelation 12: 3

The Realm of the Human Spirit
• God created the human race “a little lower
than the angels.”
• Psalm 8:4-6
•
What is man, that thou art mindful of
him? and the son of man, that thou visitest
him? For thou hast made him a little lower
than the angels, and hast crowned him with
glory and honour. Thou madest him to have
dominion over the works of thy hands; thou
hast put all things under his feet
The Realm of the Human Spirit
• The realm of human spirits is divided into
the unregenerate and regenerate.
• Kingdom of Darkness and the Kingdom of
Light
• The unregenerated are not under the
protection of the Redeemer; whereas the
regenerated can occupy a place of
authority over demonic spirits.
The Realm of the Human Spirit
• Ephesians 1: 17-19
•
I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus
Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the
Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may
know him better. I pray also that the eyes of
your heart may be enlightened in order that you
may know the hope to which he has called you,
the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints,
and his incomparably great power for us who
believe.
The Realm of the Human Spirit
• Ephesians 2: 1-2
•
As for you, you were dead in your
transgressions and sins, in which you used
to live when you followed the ways of this
world and of the ruler of the kingdom of
the air, the spirit who is now at work in
those who are disobedient.
The Realm of the Human Spirit
• Ephesians 2: 3-5
•
All of us also lived among them at one
time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful
nature and following its desires and
thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature
objects of wrath. But because of his great
love for us, God, who is rich in mercy,
made us alive with Christ even when we
were dead in transgressions—it is by grace
you have been saved.
The Realm of the Human Spirit
• Ephesians 2: 6
•
And God raised us up with Christ and
seated us with him in the heavenly realms
in Christ Jesus…
• No wonder Satan hates us!
• Col. 1: 13

For he has rescued us from the
dominion of darkness and brought us into
the kingdom of the Son he loves
Ministering Angels Serve God
• In worship and praise (148, Revelation 7:11).
•
Psalm 103: 20
•
Praise the LORD, you his angels,
you mighty ones who do his bidding,
who obey his word.
•
Rev. 7:11
•
All the angels were standing around the
throne and around the elders and the four
living creatures. They fell down on their faces
before the throne and worshipped God
Ministering Angels Serve
Believers
• By protecting them:
•
Psalm 34:7
•
God's angel sets up a circle of
protection around us while we pray.
(The Message)
Ministering Angels Serve
Believers
• By providing guidance
•
Matthew 1: 20-21
•
But after he had considered this, an
angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream
and
said, "Joseph son of David, do not be
afraid
to take Mary home as your wife,
because what is conceived in her is from the
Holy
Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and
you
are to give him the name Jesus,
because he
will save his people from their
sins."
Ministering Angels Serve
Believers
• Delivering from enemies
•
Acts 12: 6-7
•
The night before Herod was to bring
him to trial, Peter was sleeping between two
soldiers, bound with two chains, and sentries
stood guard at the entrance. Suddenly an
angel of the Lord appeared and a light shone
in the cell. He struck Peter on the side and
woke him up. "Quick, get up!" he said, and
the chains fell off Peter's wrists.
• Genesis 19:15
• Daniel 6: 22
Ministering Angels Serve
Believers
• Bearing souls to paradise
•
Luke 16: 22
•
The time came when the beggar
(Lazarus) died and the angels carried him
to Abraham's side. The rich man also died
and was buried.
Ministering Angels Serve
Believers
• Serving as personal guardians
•
Matthew 18:10
•
See that you do not look down on
one
of these little ones. For I tell you
that
their angels in heaven always see
the
face of my Father in heaven.
Ministering Angels Serve
Believers
• Controlling the forces of nature
•
Matthew 28:2
•
There was a violent earthquake,
for an angel of the Lord came down from
heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled
back the stone and sat on it.
The Origin of Satan and Demons
• The history of Satan is not a major theme in
Scripture, since the Bible is the story of
God’s redemption of the human race
(Missio Dei). However, insights into the
origin of Satan and evil are given in such
Scriptures as Isaiah 14:12-15 and Ezekiel
28: 12-15.
Isaiah 14:12-15
• 12 How you have fallen from heaven,
O morning star, son of the dawn!
You have been cast down to the earth,
you who once laid low the nations!
O morning star means “lucifer.”
• 13 You said in your heart,
No one tempted Satan. God made free
will for everyone. Satan choose to
"I will ascend to heaven;
“ascend to heaven, raise my throne
I will raise my throne
above the stars of God (above all the
other angels)”
above the stars of God;
I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly,
on the utmost heights of the sacred mountain.
• 14 I will ascend above the tops of the clouds;
I will make myself like the Most High."
• 15 But you are brought down to the grave,
to the depths of the pit.
Luke 10: 18-20
• He replied, "I saw Satan fall like
lightning from heaven. I have given you
authority to trample on snakes and
scorpions and to overcome all the power
of the enemy; nothing will harm you.
However, do not rejoice that the spirits
submit to you, but rejoice that your
names are written in heaven."
No spiritual gift of “casting our of
demons.” It is a natural ability that
everyone who has the spirit of Christ
has. This means we can practice this
natural ability. Jesus practiced this
ability about 5% of his ministry.
“I will’s” of Lucifer’s Pride
• 1. “I will ascend into heaven.”
• 2. “I will raise my throne
above the
stars (angels) of God.”
• 3. “I will enthroned upon the
Mount
of Assembly.”
• 4. “I will ascend above the heights of
the clouds.”
• 5. “I will make myself like the
Most
High.”
Ezekiel 28: 12-15
• 12 "Son of man, take up a lament concerning the king of
Tyre and say to him: 'This is what the Sovereign LORD
says:
" 'You were the model of perfection,
full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.
• 13 You were in Eden,
the garden of God;
every precious stone adorned you:
ruby, topaz and emerald,
chrysolite, onyx and jasper,
sapphire, turquoise and beryl.
Your settings and mountings were made of gold;
on the day you were created they were prepared.
Ezekiel 28:12-15
• 14 You were anointed as a guardian cherub,
for so I ordained you.
You were on the holy mount of God;
you walked among the fiery stones.
• 15 You were blameless in your ways
from the day you were created
till wickedness was found in you.
• 16 Through your widespread trade
you were filled with violence,
and you sinned.
So I drove you in disgrace from the mount of God,
and I expelled you, O guardian cherub,
from among the fiery stones.
Fruits of Rebellion & Jealousy
• He coveted what God has.
• He hated God for having what he himself could
not have.
• He attempted to rob God of what He has by
attacking the human race, especially through
the tool of deceit.
• We should especially expect Satan to be angry
and jealous of the saints since we are seated
with Christ in the heavenlies and we are to
rule with Christ and the angels (Ephesians
2:6 & I Corinthians 6:3).

"From childhood," he answered. 22"It has often
thrown him into fire or water to kill him. But if you can do
anything, take pity on us and help us." " 'If you can'?"
said Jesus. "Everything is possible for him who believes."
Immediately the boy's father exclaimed, "I do believe;
help me overcome my unbelief!" When Jesus saw that a
crowd was running to the scene, he rebuked the evil
spirit. "You deaf and mute spirit," he said, "I command
you, come out of him and never enter him again." The
spirit shrieked, convulsed him violently and came out. The
boy looked so much like a corpse that many said, "He's
dead." But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him to
his feet, and he stood up. After Jesus had gone indoors,
his disciples asked him privately, "Why couldn't we drive
it out?" He replied, "This kind can come out only by
___________."

Once when we were going to the place of
prayer, we were met by a slave girl who had a spirit
by which she predicted the future. She earned a
great deal of money for her owners by fortunetelling. This girl followed Paul and the rest of us,
shouting, "These men are servants of the Most High
God, who are telling you the way to be saved." She
kept this up for many days. Finally Paul became so
troubled that he turned around and said to the
spirit, "In the name of Jesus Christ I command you
to come out of her!" At that moment the spirit left
her.
