Lesson 1: Personal Identity
Advisory
Goal: To have each student learn about themselves and each other
Intro Discussion: “How do people see me?”
1) Have each student write a couple of paragraphs about who they are as a person
2) Have each student describe how what they wrote makes them who they are and how it is
important to them as individuals
3) Have the students share their writing and discuss the results as a class
Closing Discussion: “What did I learn about myself and others?”
Lesson2: Social Skills Baseball
Advisory
Goal: Practice identifying and reinforcing positive actions while disciplining negative actions
Intro Discussion: “What is the difference between a positive and negative action?”
1) As a class come up with at least 8 different responsible activities and assign them point values
from 1-4 the write them on a index card
Ex. Thanking a teacher for their help, politely asking another student for an item etc.
2) Come up with at least 8 different irresponsible activities and assign them with values of -1 or -2
3) Split the class up into two teams and shuffle the index cards
4) Draw a baseball diamond on the front board in the room to keep track of the play
To play:
1) When a team is “at bat” each student on that team must draw an index card and perform the
activity described on the front and describe why it is responsible/irresponsible
a. The student is then advanced that number of bases on the card
b. If the card value is negative, record that many outs for that team
c. If the cards run out before there are 3 outs, then the next team is up to bat
Closing Discussion: “What do other’s think of me when I act in a positive or negative way?”
Lesson 3: Social Behavior
Advisory
Goal: Have students identify and correct negative behavior
Intro Discussion: “Why do people continue to act in a negative way when they know that it is wrong?”
1) Have each student in your class write a paragraph describing an event whether it be real or
made up where a student does something wrong. Do not have the names on the papers
2) Collect each paragraph and randomly redistribute them
3) Give the class several minutes to read there paragraph and make notes
4) One at a time have each student summarize their paragraph and describe in detail how the
student they are reading about could have done something different in order to produce
positive behavior
5) Class discusses the results
Closing Discussion: “What are some self-regulated techniques for correcting my own negative
behavior?”
Lesson 4: Gender Identities Debate
Advisory
Goal: Identify different points of view and examine how gender plays a role in our identity and society
Intro Discussion: “How does society view the differences between men and women?”
1) Break the class up into girls and boys
2) Have each group come up with a list of stereotypical (positive and negative) assumption s about
the opposite gender
3) Have the groups exchange their lists
4) Give each group time to read through and make notes
5) Have a debate point/counterpoint discussion with the groups about the ideas and their veracity
and relevance
6) Award each group one point for a well-constructed and supported argument in their point or
counter-point
Closing Discussion: “How should society view men and women?”
Lesson 5 : Positive Attention Challenge
Advisory
Goal: To have students identify and practice proper reactions to positive and negative behavior among
peers
Intro Discussion: “How do I affect other people’s actions?”
1)
2)
3)
4)
5)
6)
Have students write down positive and negative actions on an index card
Collect index cards and shuffle
Have each student randomly choose one card and act it out in front of the class
If the action is positive the rest of the class should offer vocal encouragement and support
If the action is negative the rest of the class should remain silent
The teacher should award one point to the class for a correct reaction to the presentation and
deduct one point for an incorrect reaction
7) Determine how many points it takes for your class to “win” at the end of the period
Closing discussion: “What can I do to be a role model for others?”
Lesson 6: The Mole game
Advisory
Goal: To practice group skills as well as stressing the importance of roles in a group and how one
person’s actions can affect a whole group
Intro Discussion: “Why is it important to be able to work as a team?”
1) Break the class up into groups of 4 students
2) Secretly assign a role to each student in the group
3) Roles
a. Leader – Must keep the group on track and focused on their goal
b. Engineer – Makes sure the group has everything that they need to accomplish their goal
c. Support – Handles interaction with the teacher on group questions and checks with
other groups to check their progress
d. Mole – makes the project more difficult for the group
4) Students should not share their roles with the each other
5) Give the class a goal to accomplish (Build a certain shape, find a specific answer to a general
question etc.)
6) In the group each student acts according to their role in working toward the goal
7) After a set amount of time have each group stop what they are doing and show their results
8) Then have each group decide what role each person had
9) Determine which group was most and least successful in attaining their goal
10) The winners are the leader, engineer, and support for the furthest group and the mole from the
farthest behind group
Closing Discussion: “How can I improve the effectiveness of a team that I am on?”
*For the Activity, one idea is to have students make “3 before Me” posters, punctuality 8:20 posters, or
Organization/Planner posters to display in the room or hallway.
