Lit Term Tuesday - Eponym
2.2.16
•Similar to an allusion, referring to a specific famous person
to link his or her attributes with someone else. Using an
eponym helps your audience understand your reference.
Be careful though, because if your reference is too well
known it may come across as cliché!
Examples:
•Gary was an Abe Lincoln in yesterday’s debate. (Easily
recognizable) &Agnivesha would have been proud of
the patient’s recovery. (Only recognizable to someone in
Hindu medicine)
•Eponyms should be used sparingly, but with the right
touch they can give a perfect finish to a piece.
Lit Term Tuesday - Eponym
2.2.16
•Several that are used very frequently…no doubt you’ve
run into many of them in your reading and have probably
used them on more than one occasion…such as:
•A man who is clutching tightly to his money – Scrooge
•A person with strength beyond the normal – Hercules
•Intellectual brilliance – Einstein
•Although famous people can be used as an eponym, be
certain the person you use is well known for whatever
attribute you want to link to your target.
Lit Term Tuesday - Eponym
2.2.16
•Ex: Nero might have been a patron of the arts, but it is his
decadence and arrogance that is most closely
associated with his name.
•Stalin was a cunning general, but it is his stony demeanor
and vicious method of dealing with dissent that we
remember when we hear his name.
•If the exact trait you are trying to convey isn’t
immediately obvious then you can elaborate on the
person to make it clear why you’re making the
comparison. EX: He had the strength of Hercules, rather
than He was a Hercules.
Lit Term Tuesday - Eponym

•A modern day Moses, he led his nation to a new
beginning.
•The senator, with the patience of Job, endured setback
after setback, until his time finally came.
