Well, 60% of the English language is based on Latin and Greek, so if you know the common roots and prefixes, you can guess the meaning of many unfamiliar words. Also, Latin and Greek form the basis of most scientific and mathematical terms, so you’ll use them all the time! Step 2: Find a modern English word that uses the root, or prefix and write that in your booklet. The easiest way to do this is to Google the search phrase “root word ___” or “prefix/suffix ___”. You’ll find websites of Latin and Greek roots and prefixes with modern English words listed next to them. Step 3: Find two or three synonyms for the modern English word. You must know the meanings of the synonyms. Use a thesaurus or go to http://thesaurus.com Step 4: Explain in your own words how you think the root or prefix is connected to your modern English word. Extra credit: Draw a picture connected to the root or prefix.
