Why study Latin/Greek roots and prefixes?
Well, 60% of the English language is based on Latin and
Greek, so if you know the common roots and prefixes,
you can guess the meaning of many unfamiliar words.
Also, Latin and Greek form the basis of most scientific
and mathematical terms, so you’ll use them all the time!

Directions:
Step 1: Write the root or prefix and its English meaning on your 3x5 card.
Step 2: Find a modern English word that uses the root, or prefix and write that in your booklet.
The easiest way to do this is to Google the search phrase “root word ___” or
“prefix/suffix ___”. You’ll find websites of Latin and Greek roots and prefixes with
modern English words listed next to them. Here are a couple I use a lot:
http://www.virtualsalt.com/roots.htm , http://meriko2.tripod.com/roots.htm and
https://www.msu.edu/~defores1/gre/roots/gre_rts_afx2.htm?...
Step 3: Find two or three synonyms for the modern English word. You must know the
meanings of the synonyms. Use a thesaurus or go to http://thesaurus.com
Step 4: Explain in your own words how you think the root or prefix is connected to your modern
English word.
Extra credit: Draw a picture connected to the root or prefix.
Example:
Root: Spir
Meaning: Breath
Modern English Word: Inspire
Synonyms: To motivate, encourage or excite
Connection to root: To inspire someone is to breathe life (create interest or excitement about
a topic) into that person by giving him or her ideas or purpose.
