SIMON KENTON HIGH SCHOOL FIRST AID: RESPONDING TO EMERGENCIES David A. Drake 11132 Madison Pike Independence, KY 41051 859-960-0292 www.sk.kenton.kyschools.us Dear Parents/Guardians/Students, Welcome to our class! The Health Education Department, in association with the American Red Cross, is offering First Aid: Responding to Emergencies. The purpose of the program is to provide the citizen responder with the knowledge and skills necessary to help sustain life and minimize the consequences of injury or sudden illness until advanced medical care arrives. The program content and activities will help participants identify and eliminate potentially hazardous conditions, recognize emergencies and make appropriate decisions for first aid care. Courses within the program teach the first aid skills the citizen responder will need to perform. In addition, this program also emphasizes prevention of injuries and illness, with a focus on personal safety and health. Using a healthy lifestyles-awareness inventory, participants will assess their environment and personal habits to reduce their risk of injury and illness. In addition, this course provides consistent guidelines that enable the citizen responder to give appropriate care, regardless of the type of emergency. Courses stress the basic steps to follow in the case of an emergency, beginning with the most import step (the decision to act) and help participants confront their fears of stepping forward to provide assistance. Course content clarifies when and how to call 9-1-1 or the local emergency number, thus eliminating the confusion that often causes delays in obtaining emergency medical care. The following skills will be learned through the course of the semester: Checking an Unconscious Victim, Conscious Choking, Rescue Breathing, CPR on an Adult, Child, and Infant, Unconscious Choking, Adult AED usage, and Basic First Aid Skills.
