www.tickingclock.petfinder.org www.tickingclock.petfinder.org Have you visited the dogs in animal control in your city? www.tickingclock.petfinder.org The dogs are frightened in this strange place www.tickingclock.petfinder.org They have no names, only numbers on their cages and in the computer www.tickingclock.petfinder.org There is a noisy barrage of crashing metal gates, constant barking, shouts of kennel workers, volunteers and visitors www.tickingclock.petfinder.org Each cage is a barren concrete block with no bed, no toys - not even for little puppies who huddle together to stay warm www.tickingclock.petfinder.org There is no one to take dogs on walks unless a volunteer shows up. The dogs that were housetrained are forced to eliminate in their cages www.tickingclock.petfinder.org All the dogs are observed for a few days and then go into adoption. Then their CLOCKS start TICKING. They have about two weeks in adoption, and if not adopted, they are euthanized, puppies and all www.tickingclock.petfinder.org Dogs start to go crazy, especially if they have never been owned by a human, never worn a collar, never walked on a leash and have no obedience training www.tickingclock.petfinder.org The abandoned dogs that have not had sufficient puppy socialization hide when visitors come in and are usually not adopted because they are too nervous to interact www.tickingclock.petfinder.org If a dog does not perform obedience well when a visitor comes to take the dog to the “get acquainted” room it is unlikely it will find a home in time www.tickingclock.petfinder.org Casper was an untrained dog. I was a volunteer dog walker. He barely escaped. I found the kill list and adopted him just one day before his scheduled death www.tickingclock.petfinder.org Here is Casper at his boarding kennel where he and I learned obedience training. Casper was saved but many dogs were left behind to die on the euthanasia table www.tickingclock.petfinder.org Casper was neutered at animal control. He needed his vaccination booster. Here he is on his way to the clinic. His first impulse is to get up front with the humans www.tickingclock.petfinder.org The obedience training began immediately. First he got a real collar. His training was done with a nylon training collar. First he learned SIT, then DOWN and then HEEL. He also was housetrained www.tickingclock.petfinder.org Casper graduated from the “Puppy Room” at the kennel and began to play with the BIG DOGS. He loved to socialize with the puppies, but soon learned that all the big dogs don’t humor kids who just want to play www.tickingclock.petfinder.org This is a bird’s eye view of a successful SIT. Casper was an affectionate and attentive student www.tickingclock.petfinder.org A LONG SIT means you sit the dog and can walk away and he will remain in SIT until you release him. This takes patience and determination www.tickingclock.petfinder.org Casper awaits his reward for an immediate response to the obedience command www.tickingclock.petfinder.org It’s break time during a training session. The long pink lead is used when teaching advanced commands like LONG DOWN www.tickingclock.petfinder.org Casper was on my www.goodhomes.petfinder.org website. A wonderful couple saw this funny face with big bat ears and fell in love. The adoption process began www.tickingclock.petfinder.org This great couple agreed to continue Casper’s obedience training, agreed to bring him back to me if they didn’t want him, would make sure he got all the exercise, play, vet care and grooming needed. After several visits, signing the adoption contract, they took Casper home. www.tickingclock.petfinder.org Casper is happy and certainly being treated well and is loved immensely. www.tickingclock.petfinder.org Casper was lucky. Why are so many other dogs that are just as affectionate and trainable as Casper dying in animal control? www.tickingclock.petfinder.org Animal control is not funded by city budgets to put trainers, adoption counselors or education and outreach employees on staff as full time permanent positions www.tickingclock.petfinder.org The private rescue groups that save dogs from animal control are underfunded and run by volunteers so they don’t have the resources to find and support all the foster homes they need www.tickingclock.petfinder.org What is a foster home? A person who cares for the dog on a temporary basis so it can escape death at animal control and have time to find a permanent adopter www.tickingclock.petfinder.org Irresponsible dog owners do not alter or train their dogs, do not put current ID on them and let them roam. They are picked up by animal control. Some are adopted but many more are killed www.tickingclock.petfinder.org There are so many abandoned or lost dogs that when the cages are full and more dogs are brought in, the dogs in adoption are killed to empty some cages www.tickingclock.petfinder.org Back yard breeders contribute to the killing of homeless dogs because they breed indiscriminately and don’t sell to responsible owners and the dogs end up dumped on the street for animal control www.tickingclock.petfinder.org What can you do to stop the killing of so many adoptable dogs? www.tickingclock.petfinder.org Become a foster care volunteer with a rescue group and learn obedience training from a professional trainer www.tickingclock.petfinder.org If you can’t foster, become a volunteer with a rescue group to find more foster homes and teach obedience to foster volunteers www.tickingclock.petfinder.org Become a fundraiser for a rescue group or help at mobile adoptions where people go to adopt dogs www.tickingclock.petfinder.org Volunteer in animal control as a dog walker as often as possible so the dogs get out of their cages www.tickingclock.petfinder.org Donate money or in-kind items like vehicles, crates, cages, collars, beds, leashes, toys, etc. to local rescue groups www.tickingclock.petfinder.org Donate to support special needs dogs that need special care and/or a person with a special skill to adopt www.tickingclock.petfinder.org If you have a dog, make sure it is altered, current on vaccinations and has current ID AT ALL TIMES. You don’t know how many dogs are killed for lack of ID www.tickingclock.petfinder.org Become an advocate for homeless dogs.
