UNIVERSITY SEMINAR CLASS University Seminar Class Christina Chapa Michelle Chapa Albert Ortiz Juan Zacarias Texas A&M International University UNIVERSITY SEMINAR CLASS Introduction Texas A&M International University is dedicated to providing its students with the sense of selfworth by allowing them to become comfortable with its resources available to all students. This includes the preparation for the dedication required to complete the course work. The incoming freshmen are introduced to these affairs when they enroll in a University Learning Community where they are required to participate in a class called University Seminar. The main problem with this class is that it is linked to another major core class and adds the amount of work required. For example, the students enrolled in a history 1301 class will be placed into smaller groups that will make up a university class. Given that being a University student is stressful enough, the university class should be eliminated. This will reduce the workload and amount of stress these students go through. People should care about this proposal because it is important to relieve stress as much as possible during student’s freshmen year at the university. This proposal will effectively address the issues affecting the time spent with the University Seminar class. The addition of extra programs that are required in your major make the ability to graduate in four years very difficult. By getting rid of the University Seminar class will decrease these problems. Plan of Action Refining this issue would require the elimination of the University Seminar class. However, we propose a solution that will entail the students to be able to come in contact with the information about TAMIU, as well as the new learning and study methods that would be taught as if they UNIVERSITY SEMINAR CLASS were sitting in the University Seminar class. Our solution would be a project plan entitled TAMIU In Touch that would emphasize success under the following objectives: Maintaining the same professors from the University Seminar class Require the professors and OIT to collaborate efficiently Expanding it from computer resources to a free application to be downloaded in their phone Frequent updates of information to students through notifications to their phones Achieving these objectives appropriately will allow the elimination of the University Seminar class to transition into a broader aspect for education. This will allow students more time to complete their course work from their required classes, as well as continue to learn about the new methods without any added stress. Step one: Arrange a meeting with the Student Government Organization at Tamiu We will organize a meeting with the Student Government Organization to discuss the proposal. This will enable the committee to understand the objectives of Tamiu In Touch. Step two: Discuss Tamiu In Touch with the Dean of TAMIU After the committee considers the proposal, we will arrange a meeting with the President of TAMIU, Dr. Ray Keck, so he may acknowledge the purpose and advantages for the resource. o This will allow us to obtain the curriculum that the University Seminar class obtains so they may be initiated through TAMIU In Touch. UNIVERSITY SEMINAR CLASS Step three: Develop of team from OIT to create the program. Once the dean approves the proposal, we will converse with OIT and acquire a team to create the appearance and components of TAMIU In Touch. o We will schedule weekly meetings to ensure the program is designed appropriately, according to the curriculum. o The design will allow us to begin promoting the program to the incoming freshmen through the TAMIU website, as well as fliers located around the University. o We will also collaborate with OIT to expand the design into the production of a mobile app. This will ensure the students acknowledgement of the given information. Step four: Communicate with the professors who taught the University Seminar Class. After working on the program, we will discuss TAMIU In Touch with the professors who taught the University Seminar class to inform them of the new program. o The professors will be able to become acquainted with the program, through the assistance of OIT, as well as disclose any ideas that will help ensure effective learning. Step five: Ensure the success of TAMIU In Touch. The resource of TAMIU In Touch will be analyzed every month by having the professors complete a survey about the program. o The survey will consist of multiple choice questions, commentary responses, and suggestions. This will allow us to enhance the features or include more information, if needed. UNIVERSITY SEMINAR CLASS Qualifications The People most qualified to help resolve this issue would be the Student Government Organization at Tamiu. Which is a group of students from different major and organizations, who meet on a regular basis and discuss ideas on how to improve things on campus. Management One of the main goals of the Student Government Organization is to “Enhance the quality and scope of education at the university”. With this being one of their main goals and constantly meeting with different faculty members often getting this issue resolved of the un necessary classes could be brought to better light. The Costs and Benefits of Plan In conclusion, let us summarize the costs and benefits of our plan. First let’s start with the cost of our plan. The plan to eliminate the University class would be minimal, and as a result, it would benefit the university by reducing expenses related to that class. Second, it can be overwhelming for a first time student attending the University that is why eliminating this class would improve educational time. This would be a benefit of our plan. Other advantages of our plan include: Less stress on student Lower tuition for student More time available to student UNIVERSITY SEMINAR CLASS Thank you for reviewing our proposal we would like our group’s idea to become a reality. We would like to answer any further questions and feedback that you might have. Here is our information contact us at juanzacarias@tamiu.dusty.edu.
