Bell Work - Week 1 8-21 Thursday Please copy these words on a piece of paper and put in binder Vocal Warm-ups - vocal exercises that gradually warm-up the voice & mind examples: scales, arpeggios, leaps, intervals, diction, etc. Scale - a series of notes in a particular key that ascend and descend by steps Examples: Scale in the key of G; Major scale or Minor scale Arpeggio - a broken chord Example: sing 1, 3, 5, 8, 5, 3, 1 scale degrees or do, mi, sol, do, sol, mi, do Intervals - the distance between two notes Example: Perfect 5th, Major 3rd, minor 6th Diction - the pronunciation of words Example: “Unique New York” 8-22 Friday Sing in Unison - everyone sings the same part together Example: (you can shorten this example) typically when you sing at church everyone sings the same part together; or if a group is singing along with the radio and you are all singing the same melody then you are singing in unison Octave - same note name but is higher or lower by 8 scale degrees Example: low do and high do of a scale Part Singing - choral music that has multiple parts Example: Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass (SATB), (SSA) Bell work - Week 2 8-25 Monday Chord - three or more notes played at the same time that is in 3rds Example: C chord or I Chord (1, 3, 5 or Do, Mi, Sol) Proper Singing Posture - feet shoulders-width apart, straight spine, shoulders pulled back, and head facing forward Project (pro-ject) - using your diaphragm to sing loud enough for director and/or audience to hear you. Ex: “Sing Out!” (a phrase I will use in choir that is telling you to project your sound) Goal: Sing with good singing posture during class today, and make it a daily goal EVERY time you sing. Activity: sing warm-up on page 101 8-26 Tuesday Sharp (#) - a musical sign that makes a note a half step higher in pitch Ex: F#, G# Natural (draw sign displayed on board) - a musical sign that turns an accented note back to its original state. Ex: F# goes a half step down to be natural again, or an Eb goes a half step up to be natural again Flat (b) - a musical sign that makes a note a half step lower in pitch. Ex: Eb, Bb Key Signature - a musical indicator that is displayed at the beginning of a piece that tells the musician the key of the piece and which notes will be sharp, natural, or flat throughout the piece. Side Note: Sharp, natural, & flat signs are also known as accidentals. An accidental carries through the entire measure, so in the next measure is goes back to its original state indicated by the key signature. 8-27 Bell Work - Wednesday Tone - the sound quality of a voice that is related to breath support and proper singing techniques Ex: breathy tone vs. full tone (You do not have to write what’s below) Activity: Breathing Exercise - goal is to be able to breath in for 2 counts and out for 16 counts in one breath. You may not make this goal today, but work your way up to it and maintain this goal throughout the year. Review Previous words for quiz on Thursday 8-28 Thursday Review previous words & take quiz.
