Course Description
Students enrolled in English IV continue to increase and refine their communication skills. High school students are expected to plan, draft, and complete written compositions on a regular basis. Students edit their papers for clarity, engaging language, and correct use of the conventions and mechanics of written English to produce final, error free drafts. In English IV, students are expected to write in a variety of forms including business, personal, literary, and persuasive texts. English IV students read extensively in multiple genres from British literature and other world literature. Periods from British literature may include the old English period, medieval period, English renaissance, 17 th century, 18 th century, romantic period, Victorian period, and modern and post-modern period. Students learn literary forms and terms associated with selections being read. Students interpret the possible influences of the historical context on a literary work. All focus is on college and career readiness, engaging students and encouraging them towards academic success.

Grades will be broken down as follows:
75% Daily Work, Quizzes, Written Assignments, Class Participation
25% Tests / Research Paper
Late Work and Make-up Work
Late work will receive a deduction daily. Make-up work needs to be turned in by the third day after the absence. Long-term projects cannot be turned in as make-up work without parent
conference. If a student is absent the day of an exam, he / she will be expected to take a makeup exam, the day after he /she returns. It will not be the same exam from the test day and will primarily consist of short answer questions and essays.
Tutoring Schedule: MONDAYS and TUESDAYS from 4:05 – 4:40 p.m. and
WEDNESDAYS from 7:45 – 8:05 a.m.
Rules
1. Follow all directives the first time they are given.
2. Stay alert! Heads up / Eyes open
3. No grooming
4. No phones, music players, recorders, etc.
5. Respect yourself and each other.
Consequences
1. Warning (Name in log)
2. Stay 1 minute after bell
3. Stay 1 minute after bell and phone call to parents
4. Teacher detention in am or pm and phone call to parents
5. Administration Referral and possible removal from class (OCS)
Progress Reports
Progress Reports will be brought home by the student every 3 weeks. If a parent has not received a progress report from their child by this time, please call me or e-mail me at the school, so that another copy can be sent to you via the mail.
Power Points
Students will be expected to complete one power point presentation this term. It will be done in a group for the purpose of promoting cooperative learning and to prepare them for collaborative efforts in their future careers. A note will be sent home detailing the project before it begins in the classroom.
Research Paper
Students will be expected to write at least one research paper. It will be about a career choice.
Time will be allotted to work on the paper in class, but it will not be sufficient to complete the paper. Students must be aware that it will require time and effort outside of the classroom. The research paper will be typed, double-spaced in a 12-point font. It should be a minimum of 3-5
pages in length. This does not include the title or works cited page. All steps leading up to the final draft will be documented by the student’s research, citations, outline, and rough draft. All items relating to the research paper will be turned in with the final draft.
Due Dates
I reserve the right to change due dates and add or eliminate items from the curriculum should it be necessary. Students will be given a minimum of three days notice in order for them to accommodate the new due dates and/ or items.
