SECTION II: MAIN PURPOSE OF POSITION

Please summarize the general nature and purpose of the position briefly below. Describe in concise terms how the position relates to the mission of the department.

Provide vision, leadership and advocacy for the Library.

Lead the Library’s strategic planning process working with faculty, students, staff and campus administration to identify strategic directions, goals, and objectives aligned with the needs of the University.

Responsible for administration of the Library (which includes the Library Gallery), including planning, budget, personnel, operations, assessment, and public relations for the Library’s provision of information resources and information services to UMBC.

20% Plan for constant revision of Library & Gallery information resources and services to meet evolving UMBC community needs. Set strategic goals and objectives. Track and apply as appropriate national and international trends, technological developments and other factors which should influence planning.

10% Provide innovative leadership, with strong commitment to staff development and new technology, as well as imagination and energy in seeking external funding sources to supplement state support.

15% In accord with the Library’s mission and campus priorities, set budget and priorities; administer funds; oversee expenditures.

15% Establish library personnel policy; oversee application of library and campus personnel policy within the library, and allocation of personnel according to

Library and campus priorities.

Oversee all Library operations, in consultation with and through the unit heads in the Library Executive Council (LEC). Advise and coach unit heads; make overarching library operational decisions when there is lack of consensus among the unit heads in the LEC.

Participate in leadership of USM-wide, State-wide, regional and national projects which benefit UMBC, especially through Library consortia.

Participate in campus planning, administration, development and assessment.

Represents the Library and the campus to outside individuals, corporations and groups; represents the Library to campus individuals, governance bodies, faculty members and administrators.

SECTION VI: PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Must have vision sufficient to read print materials and Video displays; must have hearing sufficient to respond to in-person and telephone inquiries; must have manual dexterity sufficient to input data/commands by computer keyboard; must be able to retrieve bound volumes weighing up to 20 lbs. each from shelving at heights from 0" to 90".

SECTION IX: EMPLOYEE REQUIREMENTS

Education (describe specific types of degrees, if applicable):

Bachelor's degree from an accredited four year college or university.

ALA accredited MLS or equivalent degree in the Library and Information field.

Experience (describe type of experience and number of years):

At least ten years of management experience in an academic library at a research university with high to very high research activity, of which at least five years is in a high level administrative position; demonstrated knowledge of twenty-first century library issues and information technology. Demonstrated leadership in advancing library services and resources for teaching, learning and scholarship.
