Title: Bee-bim Bop!
Author: Ho Baek Lee
CONNECTING ACTIVITY (Question, conversation, brainstorming, quick write):
Close your eyes and think of a time you helped you mom in the kitchen. Maybe you
helped make breakfast by pouring the cereal, or maybe you helped make cupcakes
by mixing the batter.
BRIDGING CONVERSATION:
Remembering what it was like to help someone cook in the kitchen will help you
understand what is happening in the story.
GENRE SET-UP:
This story is a piece of fiction. When we read fiction books, or stories that are not
true, we want to be on the lookout for the characters in the story, where the story
takes place-the setting and all the different things or events that happen in the story.
STRATEGY FOCUS:
As good readers, we think about how we can connect to what we are reading.
Sometimes we can think of a time that we have done something a character does, or
maybe the book we are reading reminds us of another book we have read or
something we have seen in the world.
VOCABULARY SET-UP:
Spatula – A spatula is a flat cooking tool with a handle. We use them flip burgers on
the grill.
Boil – When something boils it gets very hot and starts to bubble. You should never
touch something that is boiling.
Chopsticks - Chopsticks come from China, they are two long sticks that some people
use to eat with instead of forks.
ASKING QUESTIONS ABOUT THE TITLE AND COVER ILLUSTRATIONS:
As a good reader I am going to look at the front of this book and ask questions. The
name of this story is Bee-bim Bop! I see a girl setting the table. I wonder why she is
setting the table. What do you wonder? Turn to a partner and share.

when you went to the store with your mom. Were you in
a hurry to buy things for dinner like the people in this
story. Did you help put things in the cart?
p.6 After “Spatula – flip the eggs high!”
Spatula that is one of our words. We learned that a
Vocabulary
spatula is a flat cooking tool with a handle. It looks like
the mom is flipping eggs with the spatula. It is slipping
under the egg since it is flat. The spatula is the right tool
for the job.

p. 10 After – “rice is on the boil”
Oh, there is another new word-boil. We know that boil
means that something is hot and bubbly. It looks like
they are boiling the rice. Point to the picture - see how
it is bubbling or there is so much steam. I know that pot
is hot and boiling. Have you heard water boil at home?
Lets try to hear that bubbling water boil.
p. 18 at end of words
Have you ever helped your mom in the kitchen and
accidently made a mess. What were some things you did
to help clean up the mess. Turn to your partner and
share how you helped clean up.
p. 20 at the end
Chopsticks that is another new word. We know that
chopsticks are used to eat with, like a fork. Look at the
girl in the picture, she is putting a spoon and two long
sticks down beside the plate. They must be the
chopsticks.
Boys and girls, have you ever helped by setting the table
before a meal. It looks like the girl in this story is putting
the chopsticks on the table. Turn to your partner and
share a time when you helped set the table. How did you
help?
