Author: Ho Baek Lee CONNECTING ACTIVITY (Question, conversation, brainstorming, quick write): Close your eyes and think of a time you helped you mom in the kitchen. Maybe you helped make breakfast by pouring the cereal, or maybe you helped make cupcakes by mixing the batter. BRIDGING CONVERSATION: Remembering what it was like to help someone cook in the kitchen will help you understand what is happening in the story. GENRE SET-UP: This story is a piece of fiction. When we read fiction books, or stories that are not true, we want to be on the lookout for the characters in the story, where the story takes place-the setting and all the different things or events that happen in the story. STRATEGY FOCUS: As good readers, we think about how we can connect to what we are reading. Sometimes we can think of a time that we have done something a character does, or maybe the book we are reading reminds us of another book we have read or something we have seen in the world. VOCABULARY SET-UP: Spatula – A spatula is a flat cooking tool with a handle. We use them flip burgers on the grill. Boil – When something boils it gets very hot and starts to bubble. You should never touch something that is boiling. Chopsticks - Chopsticks come from China, they are two long sticks that some people use to eat with instead of forks. It looks like the mom is flipping eggs with the spatula. It is slipping under the egg since it is flat. The spatula is the right tool for the job. Turn to your partner and share how you helped clean up. p. 20 at the end Chopsticks that is another new word. We know that chopsticks are used to eat with, like a fork. Look at the girl in the picture, she is putting a spoon and two long sticks down beside the plate. They must be the chopsticks.
