Types Direct Characterization- the writer tells the reader what the character is like. Indirect Characterization- character’s traits are revealed through their thoughts, actions, and words, and by what other characters say to or about them. Examples of Characterizations Direct Characterization Examples• The grumpy girl doesn’t like her calm mom. • The rude boy is sitting by the nice teacher. Indirect Characterization Examples• The man is in jail for many horrible crimes. • The boy got caught after stealing money from his mom’s purse three times. Character’s Motivations Character’s Motivations- their reasons for acting as they do-may come from internal sources, such as feelings of loneliness, or external sources, such as danger. Examples of Character’s Motivations Character’s Motivation Examples• The kids were daring the small kid to jump off the bridge. The boy did and as a result he got hurt. • The mom was yelling at the girl to get her grades up the next test the girl toke she got an “A”.
