Horror Movie Case Study – Jaws The film Jaws is a drama/thriller genre but it does have bits of horror that goes alongside the main genre’s as well, like the strong language and the gory. The film was written by Peter Benchley and Carl Gottieb but it was directed by Steven Spielberg who is known for Saving Private Ryan and Catch me if you can. The shooting of Jaws was mainly shot in USA, Massechetts but is a UK movie. Jaws had two main distributors which was Universal Pictures and Cinema International Corporation with one a US company and the other a UK company. When it was first released, it was released slowly in few theatres in major cities, but as word started to spread distributors expanded and released it in more states/cities around the world. Jaws the film was released in June 20st 1975 and was released in the UK in December 25th 1975. The rating for Jaws has always been a PG which shocked the viewer’s because of its gory shark attacks, but because films are becoming more advanced not only with technology but with speech and ratings, 37years later Jaws got its ratings changed to a 12A. This is because back in 1975 (when released) there was no rating between a PG and a 15. http://www.imdb.com/media/rm813291008/tt0073195?ref_=tt_ov_i There were three main stars in the movie; I know this because on the movie poster/ cover of the film there are three names of actors which are Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw and Richard Dreyfuss. Roy Scheider was born in 1932 and was mostly in TV series like N.Y.P.D (1968), the edge of night (1962), up until 1975 when he starred in the massive film Jaws. This was one of his first major films with the Production budget of $7million. Throughout Roy Scheider’s life he filmed 92 movies/TV series altogether. Domestic: $260,000,000 Foreign: $210,653,000 =Worldwide: $470,653,000 This actor was born in November 10th 1932 in Orange, New Jersey USA, and Died in February 10th 2008 in Little Rocks, Arkansas at the age of 75. Throughout the 60’s and 70’s Roy had filmed a lot of movies/TV series which I feel like is what made his career jump up to new levels when filming Jaws. http://www.imdb.com/ Horror Movie Case Study – Jaws Robert Shaw was born in 1927 and like Roy Scheider mainly starred in TV series in his career. Jaws wasn’t one of his first major movies like Roy, his first movie was Battle of the Bulge which was a War/Action movie which was when he started to star in more than just TV series. Throughout the time between Battle of the Bulge and Jaws he starred in only movies. But throughout his whole life he only starred in 52 movies and TV series. After Robert starred in Jaws he went onto starring in other movies like Diamonds and the avalanche express. Robert Shaw was born on August 9th 1927 in West Houghton, Lancashire in England/UK and died on August 28th 1978 in Tourmakeady, County Mayo in Ireland from a heart attack at the age of 51. Robert has been an alcoholic for most of this life but when filming the Avalanche Express the alcohol it put some serious damage to his health. But Robert died before the film was completely finished. But he did complete over 90% of his scenes before the director Mark Robson died two months before which put filming to a complete stop and then two months later Robert died of a heart attack. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001727/bio?ref_=nm_ov_bio_sm https://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&site=imghp&tbm=isch&source=hp&biw=1366&bih=667&q =robvert+shaw+filming+jaws&oq=robvert+shaw+filming+jaws&gs_l=img.3...292.5275.0.5418.25.9.0. 16.0.0.182.933.6j3.9.0.msedr...0...1ac.1.61.img..17.8.861._xhzsdyQB3g#hl=en&tbm=isch&q=robert+ shaw+jaws Horror Movie Case Study – Jaws Richard Dreyfuss was born in 1947 and is the youngest among the three. Dreyfuss has starred in a lot more than Robert and Roy with 109 films or TV series he’s been in, with Roy at 92 and Robert at 52. Like Roy and Robert, Richard only starred in TV series and then started to perform in films. Richard hadn’t been in films for that long when he starred in Jaws so I feel like Jaws was his movie that made his career bounce. Throughout the 90’s Richard only starred in movies, but I feel like by the 2000’s Richard’s career started to go back to TV series, I feel like this has happen because of his age and how good his acting is I.e. acting back in Jaws isn’t as developed as it is now and also his age, In 2001 he would be in his early 50’s which might not of been the right age for certain role’s. But by 2010 he starred in the hit series Family Guy and in the movie Red. In the 1978’s BAFTA awards he got nominated for Best Actor in the film Jaws. http://www.rottentomatoes.com/about/#about Reviews: Rotten Tomatoes Rotten Tomatoes is a “the most trusted measurement of quality for filmed entertainment. As the web's leading aggregator of movie and TV reviews from professional critics, Rotten Tomatoes offers the most comprehensive guide to what's fresh”. They invented the famous Tomatometer which is how they rate there movies. But they also give the audience some say of there opinion of the movie they are rating. Horror Movie Case Study – Jaws With the movie Jaws Rotten tomatoes gave them this: This gives the audience that haven’t seen the movie an idea of what it’s going to be like and whether it’s a good or a bad movie. But as you can see they have given Jaws a very good rating which will up their popularity because if a professional person that is supposed to rate movies says it’s good that is going to make people go see that movie because someone higher than them and with a professional outlook has said it’s good that means it’s going to be good. Sequels: There are three sequels too Jaws the first is Jaws 2 and the second is Jaws 3 and the third is Jaws: The revenge. Jaw 2 the movie was made 3years after the first movie, Jaws 3 was made 8years after and then Jaws: The revenge was made 12years after Jaws was made. Jaws’ sequel movies didn’t get as good as a rating from Rotten Tomatoes. Jaws 2, Jaws 3 and Jaws: the revenge got: Horror Movie Case Study – Jaws This shows me that because each movie was directed by a different person each time it could of effected the way in which the film turned out because all directors have a different opinion of what a movie should look like.
