These are the qualities and characteristics that are dear to you, the things you wish to show in everything you do. For example, honesty, compassion, integrity, courage, sincerity, caring. Define your Core Values • Write down 5 of the personal traits and characteristics that are important to you, like sincerity, honesty, or compassion. • Think of at least 2 people you admire (living or past). Write down 5 qualities and characteristics of these people you admire. • Choose the top 3 qualities from each list. You now have a list of 6 of your core values! Mission Statement: Definition • A mission statement is a brief description of the aims and values of a company, organization, or person. • A mission statement is a purpose statement, and answers the question, “Why do we exist?” • A company’s mission statement states the company’s purpose both for those in the company and for the public. What are the goals you hope to achieve in the next several years? Your mission statement should be positive. Use meaningful and thoughtful words. Do not write “fluffy” things like: “I want to be a lovely person and happy every day!” or “I want to live a colorful life!” Writing a Personal Mission Statement Keep it simple, clear and brief. Your mission statement should be 3 to 5 sentences. Your mission statement is a purpose statement. It shows what you want to focus on and who you want to become as a person in this part of your life, for the next 3 years. Write a mission statement that relates to your experience as a student and your pursuit of a career. [choose one to three values or principles] ... so that ... [what living by these values will give you]. I will do this by ... [specific behaviors you will use to live by these values]."
