Description of VSU Voronezh State University (VSU) is one of the largest and oldest scientific and educational
centres of Russia. It was founded in 1918.
VSU offers academic programmes at all levels including bachelor, master, graduate and postgraduate courses, post-doctoral studies, as well as continued learning. About 21,000 students
including 1000 foreign students are taught by 1,700 academic staff, including 292 professors.
There are 76 domains for post-graduate and 7 academic domains for post-doctoral research, 23
Scientific Boards for public thesis defense work at the VSU. International students are taught
and guided by the Institute of International Education. At present VSU is actively modernising
its academic models in line with the principles of the "Bologna process".
The university extensively uses teaching quality management and student academic progress
monitoring. Innovative teaching technologies are widely used at VSU.
Research is carried out under 28 major thematic priorities where several directions belong to
nanosystems, nanotechnologies and nanomaterials.
The university has prepared more than 100 thousands of professionals. There is a Nobel Prize
winner (academician Pavel Cherenkov), winners of the state prizes of Russia, academicians,
ministers, prominent scientists, and cultural leaders among the VSU graduates.
Long-term scientific and educational international cooperation is based upon direct agreements

infrastructure
The overall support in international activities successful implementation by all the VSU
faculties and departments is provided by Regional Information Centre for Scientific and
Technological Cooperation with EU that was established at Voronezh State University in
2005. In 2006 RIC was designated as the national infrastructure regional element for support of
Russia-EU cooperation by the Russian Ministry of Education and Science.
At present RIC is a part of the VSU Centre for international programmes and projects.
Its staff members are experts in international project management, including the following
experience:
The debut in FPs was in 2006 when RIC has become the first Russian regional (not from
Moscow or Saint-Petersburg) coordinator of FP6 INCO-SSA project RegionERA «Regional
Network for Support of S&T Cooperation between European Union and Russian Regions»
(2006-2008). The Centre was the key Russian partner of FP7 project E-URAL “European
Union and Russia Link for S&T co-operation in the area of the Environment” (2009-2011) and
at present it is a partner in BILAT-RUS-Advanced project “Enhancing the bilateral S&T
Partnership with the Russian Federation” (2012-2015).
RIC VSU regular activities :
 Awareness raising, information and advising support of Russian universities and
research centers in S&T cooperation with the EU:
- web-portal “EU-Russia S&T cooperation information support system”
(http://www.ric.vsu.ru). At present it is a well-known source of information on EU
funding programmes among Russian academic and research community.
- Newsletter “Grants and conferences” (twice a month) and e-alerts (twice a week).
Number of group (collective) and personal subscribers is over 950 including 216
organisations from 37 Russian regions and 8 other NIS countries.
- Organisation and carrying out of Information days, workshops, round tables,
presentations of FP7, other European programmes, Russian regional research
potential.
 Training activities in proposal writing and project management:
- RIC carried out more than 30 training workshops in different Russian cities
(Voronezh, Moscow, Rostov-on-Don, Sochi, Yekaterinburg, Arkhangelsk,
Obninsk, Barnaul, Penza, Perm, Krasnodar, Nizhnevartovsk and other). Some of

them were held in collaboration with the Delegation of the EU in Russia, APRE
(Italy) and FORTH (Greece).
- Guidelines on FP7 for Russian participants in Russian language (the first edition –
2008; second revised and extended edition - 2009, 156 pp. ©RIC VSU).
- Several guidelines highlighting different aspects of cooperation both for Russian
and EU researchers, guidelines on International staff exchange scheme in FP7.
- The Centre regularly carries out qualification courses based on approved and
certified retraining programme “Commercialization of intellectual property.
International scientific and technological cooperation” developed by RIC for
researchers, academic staff and entrepreneurs.
Opening of Russian research potential to European research community and
assistance in consortium building:
- On-line database “Partner offer profiles of Russian researchers” in Russian and
English languages that includes 291 partner offers from 35 Russian regions.
- Wide dissemination of Russian partner offers among European Info Centres.
- Individual partner search with tailor-made approach.

The Faculty of Economics is the largest research and educational centre specializing in
economic theory, economics and enterprise management, labour, finance, accounting and audit,
regional economics and territorial administration in the Central Black Soil Region.
Graduates of the Faculty get Bachelor’s and Master’s diplomas and can choose Management,
Economics or Statistics as their major. The Faculty also houses a Business School and an
Educational Centre training accountants, financial managers and auditors. The President’s
Programme for administrative personnel to work at national economy enterprises is also under
way.
The research work carried out at the Faculty is devoted to the following topics: the scientific
basis for social and economic policy and management practices; economy management system;
accounting theory and methodology, economic analysis and enterprises activities control. The
Faculty develops new scientifically based approaches to teaching management and new research

trends.
The Faculty cooperates with the University of Bremen; the University of Paderborn; the
University of Halle-Wittenberg; the National University of Ireland; the University of
Macedonia, Economic and Social Sciences; Kent State University; the University of Tartu;
Qingdao University of Science and Technology; the National University of Tajikistan, and
others.

The Faculty of Mathematics is one of the leading mathematics departments in the Central
region of Russia, which trains specialists on the solution of contemporary problems in both
basic and applied researches. Much attention is paid to training specialists whith the advanced
technologies of mathematical modeling, as well as modern computer technology.
The Faculty interested in modernization of Academic discipline “Mathematics and
Computer Science” developed skills in handling of the methods of mathematical and
algorithmic modeling in the analysis of problems of natural science, methods of mathematical
modeling in the analysis of global problems on the basis of deep knowledge of basic
mathematical sciences and computer sciences and independent analysis of physical aspects in
the classical formulations of mathematical problems.

The Faculty of Romano-Germanic Philology is a nationally and internationally recognized
center for training specialists in the theory and practice of intercultural communication. It is
comprised of 11 departments, two research centers, a phonetic laboratory equipped with modern
technology, a video room, and several computer and multimedia laboratories. At the faculty
there are four language learning centers that were established in collaboration with universities
and embassies of Germany, France, Italy, and Spain.
The faculty has been striving towards creating a system of multilevel education, including preuniversity, Bachelor’s, Master’s and Specialist degree programs, post-graduate and postdoctoral programs and professional development courses. In compliance with the latest
academic standards, the faculty offers the following programs: “Theory and Methods of
Teaching Foreign Languages and Cultures” (English, German, Spanish, French and Italian),
“Theory and Practice of Translation”, “Theoretical and Applied Linguistics”, “Bachelor of
Linguistics”, “Bachelor of Philology”, and “Master of Philology.”
The Faculty interested in joining the consortium which is developing a project on
modernization of Program ‘Translation and Interpreting Studies and Training’
The International Relations Faculty was established in 2002 and is is the first department
within the classical university in the Central Black Soil Region, where trains specialists and
bachelors in the world economy, international relations and regional studies.
The faculty is comprised of two departments: the Department of International Relations and
Regional Studies and the Department of International Economics and Foreign Economic
Affairs.
The teaching staff is comprised of 40 members, including 6 Professors and 10 Associate
Professors. Fifteen members of the staff have Candidate degrees (PhD). The faculty currently
enrolls 790 students, including 40 international students.
The students of the faculty specialize in international relations, international economics and

regional studies focusing on the EU and North American countries. The faculty also offers
Master’s degree programs in European Studies.
The students are required to study two European languages with the choices of English, Italian,
German, Spanish and French. The faculty also offers an optional course in the Chinese
language.
In the field tourism the department offers the following study programmes:
On the Specialist and Bachelor levels: “World Tourism Economy” Specialization («World
Economy» major)
Subjects: History of international tourism and hotel industry, Tourist market economy,
International tourism economy and organization, World hotel industry, Tour operation and tour
agent services and their organization, Tourism ethics, Advertising in tourism.
The Faculty interested in modernization of Master program “Business in Emerging
Markets”.
The Faculty of Law was established in 1958 and is the centre of legal education and
jurisprudence in the Black Soil Region of the Russian Federation. Voronezh law school is
considered to be one of the best law schools in Russia.
The faculty is comprised of 11 departments, a resource centre and a forensics laboratory. The
faculty currently enrolls 4,000 full-time and part-time students. The academic staff of the
faculty is comprised of 21 professors and over 70 PhDs (Candidates of Law). The faculty
publishes 14 periodicals such as the law series.
The faculty cooperates with foreign universities and research institutes from the Czech
Republic, Germany, Poland, Kazakhstan and Belarus.
The faculty is famous both in Russia and abroad for its research teams in various areas of law,
including constitutional law, administrative law, financial law, civil law and criminology.
The Faculty interested in modernization of the Master's program, the distance learning
program and the Program for Continuing Education "International and European law".
The Computer Science Faculty is one of the first CS faculties opened in Russia. All levels of
higher education (BSc, Specialist, MSc and PhD) are provided both for Russian and foreign
students. Last 5 years CSF has strong cooperation with Voronezh affiliate of the Siemens IT
Solutions and Services company. The Joint Training Center (JTC) was established and new
academic program was developed targeted SBS interests. Hundreds students graduated from the
JTC. In 2006 CSF has been assessed and registered by NQA Global Assurance Limited against
the provision of ISO 9001:2000 standard. Microsoft IT Academy and Authorized Prometric™
Testing Center at the CSF were established in 2007. In 2008 was opened DataArt Labs as the
joint CSF and DataArt (www.dataart.com) project aiming innovative approach to effective
education - IT-company cooperation. The CS Faculty is involved in 2 TEMPUS projects:

The Faculty of Geography, Geoecology and Tourism was established in 1934 on the base of
the VSU and for this moment comprised of 4 departments: Natural Environment Management,
Socio-Economic Geography and Regional Studies, Geo-Ecology and Environmental Studies,
Physical Geography and Landscaping and Recreational geography, regional geography and
tourism. The Faculty is closely associated with a number of research units, such as Geography,
Land Use and Geo-Ecology Research Centre and Research Centre for Human Ecology.
The Faculty offers undergraduate and graduate degree courses as well as a wide range of postgraduate research programmes in the areas of demography, ecology, landscape geography,
paleogeography, regional studies and tourism and successfully practices integrated teaching
methods and techniques, focusing on applied aspects of training programmes.
The Faculty’s international community includes students from Africa, South America and
Europe. It collaborates in teaching and research with universities in Germany and Great Britain.
The Faculty carries out complex researches on studying ecology of cities of the Central Russia,
and Voronezh serves as a base city for modelling calculations. Researches address such

problems as risk assessment of the population health connected with a condition of the city
environment; the analysis of ecologically caused diseases of the population in view of factors of
a microclimate and pollution of air pool of megacities; defining zones of ecological risk and
geoinformation mapping of medico-ecological situations. Results of researches are used in
teaching courses «Human Ecology», «Technogenic systems and ecological risk», "Ecological
monitoring". The GGT Faculty is involved in the TEMPUS project 530644-TEMPUS-1-20121-ES-TEMPUS-JPCR «HUMAN Security (environment, quality of food, public health and
society) on Territories Contaminated by Radioactive Agents» (2012-2015).
