Emerging Leadership Role of Nursing and It’s Praxis HONLEYLYNN ALCANTARA SFSU NURS 558 Dr. Popoola What is Praxis? Greek origin: doing action in contrast to theoria (theory) and poietike (making-action) Enactment of one’s values rather than enactment of theories Acting justly and truthfully MINDFUL ACTION!!! Gap Between Theory & Parctice 1.) Nurses rarely read research reports 2.) Nurses rarely understand research reports when they do read them 3.) Nurses are reluctant or unable to apply the findings to practice, when they do understand them Florence Nightingale and Praxis Nightingale asserted that nurses should not only be proficient in knowing the symptoms and what is to be done but most importantly the “Reason Why” of such symptoms and actions needed to be done. New developments in nursing practice grow out from findings of scientific research studies and nurses are therefore guided by the writings of theorists in everyday practice. Emerging Leadership Role of Nursing Nightigale believed that nursing could become the skilled servant of medicine, surgery and hygiene and not the servant of physicians, doctors and health officers. Nurses should be “thoughtful strategists” - informed decision makers whose independent actions are based in education, evidence and experience VS. “functional doers” - carry out instructions of others Leadership should not be an optional role of function for nurses Nurses should develop leadership skills and competencies to be able to redesign and reform the current health care system.
