Why do human beings have a strong and fearful reaction to that which is almost, but not quite human? 1. Why have you chosen your sub- ject and the related question? human brain and am fascinated at how we perceive things around us. I think that this question can allow me to explore psychology. I am particularly interested in the What I find interesting is that people have different fears and different ideas of what is uncanny. When I saw the examples of what is uncanny, I didnt feel dis- gusted and was rather a nutural response, and I am curiuos why people see it as uncanny. Notes from Lecture lecture 1 creepy girl MAshitimo mori UNCanny valley looks very like human but isn't he makes robots, a buddhist he wants to make robots to not resemble to humans and freak people out this also relates to 3d animation basica idea, when something looks so like human it gets attached to us and we will hate it and become scared. something you recognise but theres somehitng weird with it. when you believe two things and at the same time it contradicts, two competing thoughts make you feel repulse you decided to disconnect to the creepy items because its scary. sigmund freud the uncanny is a product of uncertainty creatiing artificial life wanting to catergorise things, the human psychology likes to categorise things taurine test blade runner is an example, replica was based on phillip k dick;s 1968 test empathy its empathy that separates replicas and humans bruce willis 6th senxth robot is a word for slave death dead body and corpses near liberalism, more happy more free but forcing workers to pretend to be happy, leading to 0 hr contracts and all is due to machines abjection- something you cant quite name, something that transgresses boundaries. we feel stressed the fact that we have no control over our bodies ie the spit, you spit and to drink again makes you feel sick and gross Jlia Kristeca’s 1982 text powers of horror she has dramatic style of writing the shift between inside and outside makes us disgusted video watched : almost human, trauma mannequins for military karel capek 1921 play r.u.r as the feminisation of labour why would you want non humans to looks more like human and non human to look like too making robots look more like woman and approachable ultra realistic dental traing androids robot showa hanako video: inside the sex doll factory final fantasy the spirits with in Lecture Response 1 c This is the first time being introduced to the Uncanny Valley. And understanding that people have a fear to things that looks like human but isn’t. For instance zombies. However, I don’t find zombies scary or uncomfortable to look at. I wanted to get more of an insight into the Uncanny Valley so I decided to search and look for movies/ objects that most people found uncanny. A short clip of the film ‘The Adventure of Tintin’ was shown in the lecture as it is one of the uncanny films. I watched the animation but did c not get the same reaction. I didn’t find the animation/ character design scary or uncomfortable to watch. At times it was slightly confusing and weird because I would think the film is a live action and real but then remember it is a CGI animation. However, I see it as a positive point and this makes me feel intrigued about the design instead. I think the realistic approach is very successful and deserves praise. Blade runner is also a film that includes the uncanny feature. For me the character was more scary instead because of the attributes and the personality it had. There was a character/robot that was fighting with another character. I think that mind/ action of a person is rather more scary than the features instead. In my opinion, I think anything that looks unattractive can create fear with in a person. This is because if we take zombies and vampires as examples, both look very human but because zombies are depicted in a revolting way we dislike the image already even though we know it is fake. On the other hand, vampires are depicted as mysterious and beautiful also because of the characteristics that they have we like them more. Although this is my personal opinion, I would like to research Lecture Response 2 After this lecture I was particularly interested in zombies because I learnt about the history of it and where is actually originated from. It has a great contrast to between modern and traditional zombie. I researched more about zombies and came across a video which is about a zombie prank. So for this lecture response, I will discuss my views towards the modern zombie and mainly responding to the video/ prank I saw. Although zombies are not real it looks revolting and unattractive, anyone seeing it will be scared by it. I felt that it was extremely heartless for these people to planned this prank and frighten the passengers which actually could have led to a heart attack and death. Who then will own up to it? Zombies kill and eat human flesh but I think they are no different to us normal human beings. Maybe we can blame that zombies are infected leading them to eat humans but humans do that already. This prank shows that humans are as zombies. People are very malicious even though they are aware of their actions and still proceed to hurt others. I think the modern day zombies is actually reflecting on humans and how the society is. 2 .How you are going to go about answering the question? • The Uncanny freud 1999, • (Approaching Abjection) of Julia Kristeva’s Powers of Horror (1980) • The introduction to Mary Douglas’s Purity and Danger (1991) • Look at examples of the uncanny • Understand the common fears Pediophobia- (It is pretty common) • Ive watched documentry about doll obsession • Create a survey to see what people fear 3. What do you think you will gain by answering this question? Uunderstanding about fear and what are the typical fears people have. This can be applied to my design and animation work. It will also help to build strong stick- ing characters. Understanding of how the uncanny is activated in each person and how it is in-corporated in zombie films/ In cinema 4.Who will you use to help you construct your arguments?
