I. Goal:

Required Adaptations/Modifications:
Understand how reading helps us understand history.
II. Objectives:
Students will retell the Happy Birthday
Martin Luther King by using a retelling rope
as a whole class.
Students will summarize, in two sentences,
Martin Luther King Jr's hopes for the future,
in rough draft and final MLK project format.
Required Adaptations/Modifications:
During retelling students
will receive support from
classmates for retelling
comprehension task.
Students with difficulty in
writing will be allowed to
write one sentence.
III: Faith / Values Integration:
 Students create own values that they
want to see placed in the
classroom. They will stand in front of
class and share their wishes for class
behavior.
 This encourages and teaches students how
to be proactive about things they want
to see changed.
 Including standing up for values they
believe in.

Direct technology will not be used in todays

VI: Procedure:
Begin lesson in reading circle.
A. Set / Hook: 5 Minutes: Picture walk in order
to remember story read from previous day.
Comprehension Strategy: Retelling Rope
Students retell story using a retelling rope.
B. Transition: "Today and tomorrow we will get
the opportunity to be our own Martin Luther King
Jr. in our classroom!"
C. Main Lesson:
2 Minutes: Show students example and explain
expectatoins of performance task, explain plan
for next two days

Compose a rough draft of their own dreams
and Martin Luther King Jr. dreams.
 Have teacher edit rough draft
 Start decorating and creating Martin Luther
King Jr.
 After edited, write final draft on Martin
Luther King Jr.
 On last day will present dreams with the
class, as if we were Martin Luther King Jr.
33 Minutes: Instruct students to go into their
writing workshops and start on their rough
drafts. Explain to them what is expected.
Expectations:





2-3 sentences for both MLK dreams as well
as their own dreams.
Their own dreams need to be things they
want to see changed in their classroom, to
make it a better enviornement for
everyone.
When rough draft compelete students come
pick up MLK template to decorate.
Students start to decorate MLK template and
draw picture to go along with while waiting
for rough draft to be edited.
Once rough draft edited students compelete
final draft on MLK template.
Required Adaptations/Modifications:
Struggling writers will
receive assisstance from
teacher as needed to offer
more support and
scaffolding.
Students who struggle with
comprehension will be
allowed to ask a partner to
teach them what Martin
Luther King Jr. believed
in.

D. Transition: Students clean up their coloring
utensils and meet in story time on floor.
E. Conclusion:
3 Minute:
Finalize and bring closure to learning today.
Questions:
 What did you guys learn today.
 What did you find hard to do?
 Vocab word review using flashcards.
 Tell students proud of their hard work
today, and excited to see what their dreams
are for the class tomorrow where we will
finish our MLK template and share with each
other.
VII. Assessment:
 Retelling rope of Happy Birthday Martin
Luther king.
 Rough draft of 2-3 sentences including
both MLK dreams and own dreams for
classroom.
Required Adaptations/Modifications:
VIII. Assignment:
 Complete rough draft of MLK dreams as
well as dreams for class. Each one
should be 2-3 sentences.
 Color MLK template.
 Write final draft on MLK dreams
tempalte.

 I will complete this after the lesson.
 During lesson I will be looking for
understanding of MLK from retelling
rope.
 I will also observe what they are

understand their understanding of MLK
