ISSUE AREA: HUMAN RIGHTS LEARNING GLOBAL GOALS Join generationOn as we celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. As a Baptist minister and a recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, Dr. King advocated for nonviolence while leading the Civil Rights Movement from the mid-1950s until he was killed in 1968. Dr. King worked to support equality and ensure that people are not treated differently because of factors like the color of their skin. As we remember and thank Dr. King for the contributions he made, we continue his vision of equal rights for all by empowering youth to make their mark on the world during this national day of service. What You’ll Do: Choose your favorite global goal and take a global goals selfie! Why It Matters: As we remember the invaluable contributions of Martin Luther King, Jr. on MLK Day, we also look to the future and see the body of work that remains to be done to ensure that all people are given equal opportunities to live healthy and rewarding lives. Dr. King’s dedication to human rights and social justice is alive today and reflected in the fact that on September 25, 2015, a series of 17 ambitious goals to end poverty, fight inequality and injustice, and tackle climate change by 2030, were adopted by 193 world leaders at the United Nations. These Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) (also known as Global Goals) epitomize Martin Luther King’s dream for true equality and justice, and his dissatisfaction with anything less. However, if the goals are going to work, everyone needs to know about them. You can’t fight for your rights if you don’t know what they are. You can’t convince world leaders to do what needs to be done if you don’t know what you’re convincing them to do. This is the same wherever you are in the world. Therefore, generationOn, along with the UN and so many others who are already supporting implementation of the Global Goals, is calling on all of you to help spread the word about these goals and ensure that they become a reality. generationOn.org 1 Project Instructions: Start spreading the word about the Global Goals! 1.
