A note from the team We would like to congratulate you on your place at MedUSA this summer. This experience will be one that you will never forget. You will experience life as a Doctor, mix with some of the best Doctors and Surgeons from across the country. You will be mentored by current medical students, and share this experience with other students who like you have shown dedication to there studies and a passion for Medicine. How to get to the event Pairing scheme Sample schedule Exact times of registration and departures will be given to you closer to the event If you do have any additional questions you should contact medusa@medusa-us.com What should I wear at MedUSA Clinical sessions Lectures Presentation day In clinical sessions and practicals, students will be required to wear their scrubs. These will be given to you at registration. You will be advised on your schedule as to when you will need to wear them. We ask that students are dressed in a smart casual manner. Days on the program can be long and the weather hot, so we ask that you are in comfortable clothing. Jeans and t-shirts are acceptable, however t-shirts with slogans which may offend others are not. Comfortable footwear is essential. The final day of MedUSA we ask you dress more formally, this is for our presentation ceremony. A series of awards and prizes will be given out as a celebration of the weeks achievements. Should I bring anything else? Students will be allowed to use University facilities in periods of free time, this includes the gym, swimming pools, basketball courts. If you wish to do this please bring along appropriate clothing and footwear. Please bring a passport sized photograph of yourself, you will need this for your MedUSA ID card. Some activities may take place outside, we do ask that students bring sun block. Although breakfast and evening meals are included, we do ask that students bring enough spending money for lunches, snacks etc. Please remember any stationery for note taking in lectures Directions to MedUSA UCLA Driving Directions to UCLA Locate UCLA by Zip code (90095) or by street address (40 Hilgard Avenue). Call 310-8254321 for recorded directions. The closest major airport to UCLA is the Los Angeles International Airport, LAX. From LAX, take the 405 Freeway north to the Wilshire Blvd. East exit. Continue east on Wilshire for several blocks, moving into the left lane. Make a left turn on Westwood Blvd. and follow it into campus. A map will be sent out to students before the course. Flights to LAX If you are landing at LAX airport please inform the MedUSA team as soon as possible, with your flight details. medusa@medusa-us.com Arrivals and departures UCLA Program Arrival time Sunday July 19th at UCLA, registration is from 9.00am to 1.30pm. Departure time Saturday July 25th from UCLA, after the Awards Ceremony at approx 4.00pm These times will be confirmed closer to the date via email. MedUSA’s pairing scheme Most students attending the course, will be coming alone, and from different parts of the country. MedUSA offers a pairing scheme in the weeks before the course. where we will offer to swap email addresses of our students, this will give you the chance to get to know someone before the course starts. A member of the MedUSA team will be in touch over the coming weeks, to ask if you wish to join this option. What can I expect from the practical sessions At MedUSA you will get a real clinical experience, a few of the practical sessions that students will take part in are keyhole surgery simulation, ultra sound, auscultation, blood taking, X-ray and patient sessions. Patient sessions Students coming into contact with patients within the campus or within medical institutions are asked to behave in a courteous manner at all times. Scrubs Students will be required to wear their scrubs for practical Sessions, these will be given to you at registration. What can I expect from lectures Lectures will be given by some of the country’s leading Doctors, Surgeons and professors. Students will hear from neurosurgeons, immunologists, orthopedic surgeons, to name a few. Medical students will also be giving advice on the medical school application process in the student questions and answers sessions. You may find it useful to write down any questions you may have prior to the course, to make the most of these sessions. We would like to make students aware that in lectures there will be slides or videos used of a graphic nature, such as surgery or patient injuries. There will be two students occupying each room. If you are attending MedUSA with a friend and wish to be placed in the same room, please advise the MedUSA team and we will try and make this possible. Each room has a private bathroom, air conditioning, cable TV, wired for a computer network. Each room will also have a maid service each day. Within the building you will find a computer lab and fitness suite. You will also find laundry facilities on the ground floor in De Neve Plaza. Rooms will contain bed linen and towels during your stay. There will not be hair dryers available in the dorms. There is also a 24hr front desk to assist you. De Neve Plaza Charles E.
