Choice Board Literary Text Unit/ The Lightning Thief What a Character! *Research a mythological character featured in The Lightning Thief. *Create a Prezi to share with the class. *Prezi must be informational and provide additional information that is not presented in the reading selection. *Must be at least 10 slides. *MUST create a bibliography with 3 non web-based sources (BOOK based only) ELACC6W4: Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience. Model of a NEW Cabin/Scene Make a model (3-D OR drawing) depicting relevant content for a well-known mythological character (ex. Arachne, Demeter, Persephone). You must have your “model” approved by your teacher. Remember: include furnishings and décor that relate directly to YOUR character’s traits. Include a written display card explaining the significance of your model. ELACC6SL1: Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 6 topics, texts, and issues, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly. Mythology in Modern Life/Art/Logos Research (Computer and book based: must include both) Create a presentation (Prezi) that illustrates how ancient mythology is still evident in our world today. Be careful to screen your information for appropriate content. The poems need to be written on separate pieces of paper…NOT front/back. OR Write poems based on the book: Modern Rhymes about Ancient Times Mobile Create a mobile for The Lightning Thief or another Rick Riordan book. You must include elements of setting, theme, plot, conflict, and characters. ***Life-Size Character • Choose 25 key words from the reading selection. • These words must be challenging vocabulary. • NO proper nouns or names. Pictionary • Create a dictionary that lists each word, its meaning, and a sentence from the text with page number. • Include at least one illustration for each word. The I Am Poem This is a poem that can be used to describe any character, setting, idea or concept fond in literature from language arts, social studies, science, math, and art. I am I wonder I hear I see I want I am I pretend I feel I touch I worry I cry I am (Two special characteristics the person or thing has) (something the person or thing could actually be curious about) (an imaginary or actual sound) (an imaginary or actual sight) (a desire) (the first line of the poem is repeated) (something the person or thing could actually pretend to do) (a feeling about the imaginary) (an imaginary touch) (something that could really bother the person or thing) (something that could make the person or thing sad) (the first line of the poem is repeated) I (something the person or thing knows to be true) understand (something the person or thing believes in) I say (something the person or thing could actually dream about) I dream (something the person or thing could make an effort to do) I try (something the person or thing could hope for) I hope (the first line of the poem repeated) I am For the poem about your person, you must show that you have researched and read about him. You must have key identifiers in your poem about what he believed in and why he fought for independence. You must make sure you include a location of where this person fought for independence. MAKING A MOBILE You are to make a mobile that represents aspects of the novel. Incorporate setting, theme, plot, conflict, characters. The mobile is to have at least six items hanging from it. On the back of each piece, you are to write an explanation of why you used each of the items and what they represent. (This is easily done by typing in a small font and cutting & pasting it to the back.) The mobile is to be balanced and hang from a central point or structure. The mobile needs to be durably constructed, visually appealing, as well as creative. Mobiles can be made from coat hangers, tree branches, dowels, cardboard, or any other lightweight durable material Objects are suspended from the base by thin wire, string, or thread The mobile must be balanced.
