INTRO – personal story of why I became a librarian and who does what in the library.
Today’s Task – Twofold - Library Intro & Research together – Buddy Bolden, Jazz Pioneer
(some say first jazz musician)




General Research Process (research as journey ppt)
o Compare a simple horizontal search process with more realistic scenario
o Personal story of my Master’s thesis and the twists and turns of researching,
trying to get an article published, last week having someone find article online
o READ all along the journey – No READING then No RESEARCH
Specific Research Steps (inverted triangle ppt)
o Explore to Synthesize & Focus or Exploring to Narrowing
o Talk about types used for each of the 3 steps
o READ all along as you narrow topic

o Show Links at top – By Subject (History), All, Newspapers, Ebooks, Specific Title
o ACTIVITY – On handout - “Match database to the correct definition”
o Loggin to computer, navigate to library.elgin.edu, and find the “Databases by
Subject Link (Give 2 minutes & then discuss)
Research Guide for HIS 151 – discuss the tabs and information available for papers
RESEARCH, STEP 1 - EXPLORE


ENCYCLOPEDIA – Search/Read an encyclopedia article about Buddy Bolden
o ASK – What related topics might you read about?
o DEMONSTRATE - New Grove Dictionary (Online now)
 Show the print/how to cite/other related content
 discuss facts, keywords, questions or issues raised, i.e. was he first jazz
musician? (Put onto handout with overhead)
o Other eBooks
 Go to “Article Databases by Subject” E-Books
 Oxford Music, Credo, Britannica (Ragtime into Jazz), Gale Virtual
Reference, etc.
 ACTIVITY - Find another “Buddy Bolden” article
 ADD facts, keywords, questions onto the handout also make note of the
citation feature – write down database used and tile of item(s) found.
o DISCUSSION
 Facts, keywords, questions as well as sources – ask for someone to DEMO
Regular BOOKS & Ebooks
o Library Catalog – Keyword “Buddy Bolden” – one main book, but can find others
based on keywords located – i.e. New Orleans, ragtime & jazz. SEARCH index,
and find leads that take you down path to more information.
