Bell Ringer: February 4/5 Please hand in your body paragraph worksheets to the basket. Please make sure they are all stapled together and your name is on the front page. Grab 4 different colored markers or colored pencils from the bins – or you can use your own highlighters. You could share with a neighbor if we run out of supplies. Keep your typed rough draft on the corner of your desk. You will be editing it today in class. Finishing up the Quiz: 2A, 4A Since we had multiple people leave last class period for the AP/CC discussion in the auditorium, I need those people to come see me so they can finish their quiz. If you were able to finish, please find another person who has nothing else to do right now and have them read through your draft, finding any errors they see in spelling, grammar, punctuation, as well as to see if there are parts that do not make sense. Self-Edit: Conclusion Peasant Farmers Majority of the people in USSR. Started out happy to do the work to provide them with freedom/new way of life. Even when they realized life was not getting easier, most were still willing to work hard, but some revolted. Peasant Revolts: event where farmers who were tired of growing crops and having ALL of it taken away revolted by destroying their crops. They were mainly frustrated with the fact that they were not allowed to keep any of the food. Many who revolted were sent to concentration camps – many died while there. Loyalists/Working Class/Industrialists Blue collar workers – the muscle. Did not back down from any challenge – faithful to the cause. Did more work than others, making the idea of communism unfair as it was obvious they were the reason everything was working out so well. Aristocrats Wealthy Russians (prior to revolution) Many left soon after revolution when they realized they would be asked to work side by side with all classes of people. Classless society took away their prestige. Were loyal to czarist form of gov’t. Blind Followers Uneducated Couldn’t see what was happening Easily manipulated by the new gov’t Used to help control those who were rising against gov’t Created diversions if needed KGB/Secret Police Worked for Stalin Used as a scare tactic to help with those went against Stalin’s plans Would put people in concentration camps or kill if needed Were part of the Moscow Purge Trials (1936-1938) where people were forced to falsely admit to crimes they did not commit so Stalin could scare others into continuing to follow him (mainly wanted to take out those who still supported Trotsky). Politburo Worked for Stalin Governing party (executive branch) At first they worked with the people to help make rules and decisions. Later, took over all control and no longer let the people have any say. Much later, Stalin went against them when he started feeling paranoid that he may lose power.
