 LWB vision: build sustainable libraries and
support their custodians and advocates —
librarians..
 LWB service trips to Guatemala annually since
2010.
Service Trips
 April 2010 –11 students from McGill University – first
visit to Asturias Academy
 April 2011 –27 students from 5 Canadian Universities
 May 2012 –13 LIS students & professionals
 April 2013 –17 participants (students & professionals)
– first visit to Chajul
 April 2014 – 12 participants (students &
professionals)

Asturias Academy
 Private non-profit K-12 school in Xela
(Quetzaltenango)
 Founded in 1994 to eliminate education disparities
through subsidized tuition. Curriculum based on Paulo
Friere’s “Pedagogy of the Oppressed” focussed on
critical thinking, leadership, learner-teacher model of
education.
 Serves aprox. 300 students from varying
backgrounds: indigenous, non-indigenous, poor,
working class and middle class.

 4 service trips
 Developed strategic planning documents to
build the library
 Provided funding for 2 volunteer librarians

 Assisted with project plan to implement a
computer-based lending system, 2012 – 2013
 Donated more than 1000 books over 4 years
Limitless Horizons Ixil
 Located in Chajul, remote town in rural Guatemala
 “transforming community through education”
 6 LWB volunteers visited Chajul in 2013
 Officially partnered with LWB since 2013
 Community library est. 2010
 Over 3000 titles serving over 1400 users of all ages
 Many students use the library as a resource for
homework, study and free time
