Opening Ceremony Script
Welcome to the 2014 First Lego League Qualifier for the World Class season
at____________
I’m you emcee ____________
Please rise and join us in our pledge of Allegiance.
I’ll start by giving you a quick bit of background about today’s competition
FLL engages students in hands-on robotics design and authentic scientific
research. FLL is a worldwide program for children (9-14 year olds) created in a
partnership between FIRST and the LEGO Company. Students have 2 minutes and
30 seconds to complete the missions table.
In the 2014 World Class Challenge, over 200,000 children ages 9 to 14 from over
70 countries will find a better or more innovative way to help someone learn.
Teams will be judged on:
Robot Design-How sturdy, unique, and effective is the robot design &
programming.
Presentation of a Project – Does the team’s 5 minute presentation incorporate
facts and solutions
Core Values-Do team members utilize “Gracious professionalism, coopertition and
teamwork”?
Table Performance – How well did robot run its missions.
The top 4 scoring teams will advance to the championship tournament
(PAUSE) You can’t have a competition like this without a lot of great people to
make it happen. Our referees and judges have VOLUNTEERED their time for
today’s exhibition; let’s be sure to show them the respect they deserve! There will
be no replays even if a round was videotaped.
Allow me to introduce today’s AWESOME judges & referees. Judges if you will

We also have volunteers working as scorekeepers, table monitors, runners, clean up

Of course the real stars today are the team members and their coaches who have
been working so hard these past few months. Despite schoolwork, soccer, football,
band, and all of the other extra-curricular activities, these kids met several times
per week to research, design and develop the robots you will be seeing here today.
When I call your team number please rise and be recognized.
(Give each team enough time be recognized.

Teams you have been assigned a pit area. You may make adjustments to robots in
this area. 1 Practice table is located in each pit area. These tables are for testing
your robot and making last minute adjustments. Be courteous and take turns! (2.5
minutes per team)
Mats and mission models for practice and performance tables have been donated
by visiting teams. Please do NOT remove any models from the tables! I’d like to
remind teams there will be no private practice tables.
Two team members will be allowed in the performance ring. The remaining team
members must stay behind the draped off area. Let the referees know if you will
be tagging in and out. Please do not stand in front of the performance table
nearest the bleachers. (point to the area) We don’t want to block the view of our
audience. Each team will have 4 opportunities to navigate the obstacle course.
Please do not leave the table area until the table has been reset. This will eliminate
teams walking away with mission models.
The score is determined at the END of the match, based on the condition of the
field at that time only. The highest score out of 4 tries will be applied to your
teams table performance score.
Spectators who enter the judging rooms must enter and leave the room with the
team and must remain for the entire interview. Viewers must remain silent and cell
phones should be turned off.
Coaches, it is your responsibility to keep track of your team. Team members
should stay in the two gymnasiums, cafeteria and bathrooms. The rest of the
school is off limits. Please make sure you are on time for all judging. Scheduling is
very tight and there is little room for error.
Be sure to support our Food stand. We have Subway sandwiches, pizza, chips,
cookies, and drinks. Please keep food and drinks in cafeteria or pit area. There is
NO maid service here so please pick up after you’re self.
We also have the official FLL t-shirt for sale the cost is $15. (SHOW A SAMPLE)
We have a limited number and sizes so don’t delay. Shirts will be on sale until
12:00.
Remember to be polite to other teams though out the day.
Before we send you off to the competition let’s remember that
the FLL Robotic competition is not about winning or losing, it’s about learning and
having fun! Have a great day and good luck!

May I have your attention please!
While the judges are deliberating we suggest you take a few minutes to police your
pit area. Pick up garbage; collect personal items, inventory your robotic
equipment. If you loaned us your mats and mission pieces, please don’t forget to
pick them up. We will call teams back into the gym when we’re ready to announce
the results.
When teams return for awards you should line up as you did for the opening
ceremonies to receive your medals. Will the teams please come forward to receive
their medallions:
