HUNTSVILLE HIGH SCHOOL 2014 - 2015 Grade 9 Academic Math MPM 1D Andrea Di Febo andrea.difebo@tldsb.on.ca 705-789-5594 ext 305 Classroom Website: msdifebo.weebly.com COURSE OVERVIEW: This course enables students to develop an understanding of mathematical concepts related to algebra, analytic geometry, and measurement and geometry through investigation, the effective use of technology, and abstract reasoning. Students will investigate relationships, which they will then generalize as equations of lines, and will determine the connections between different representations of a linear relation. They will also explore relationships that emerge from the measurement of three-dimensional figures and two-dimensional shapes. Students will reason mathematically and communicate their thinking as they solve multi-step problems. COURSE TOPICS: Unit 1 Unit 2 Unit 3 Unit 4 Unit 5 Unit 6 Unit 7 Unit 8 Mathematical Processes & Review Relations Polynomials Equations Modelling with Graphs Analyzing Linear Relationships Geometric Relationships Measurement & Optimizing Measurement COURSE BIG IDEAS Students will: ✓ Develop problem solving strategies and conduct investigations to deepen their mathematical understanding. ✓ Develop and apply reasoning skills to assess, justify, plan, and construct mathematical arguments. ✓ Demonstrate self-reflection and self-monitoring of thinking skills to help clarify their understanding as they work through an investigation or problem. ✓ Select a use a variety of concrete, visual, and electronic learning tools as well as computational strategies to investigate mathematical ideas and to solve problems. ✓ Make connections among mathematical concepts, relate mathematical ideas to situations and a variety of contexts. ✓ Create a variety of mathematical ideas, connect and compare them, and select and apply appropriate representations to solve problems. ✓ Communicate mathematical thinking orally, visually, and in writing using mathematical conventions. The Ontario Ministry of Education’s Grade 9 Math Curriculum http://www.edu.gov.on.ca/eng/curriculum/secondary/math910curr.pdf Assessment and Evaluation: Term Work – 70% Knowledge Communication Application Thinking/Inquiry Summative Evaluations – 30% Final Exam 15% EQAO assessment 15% 20% 15% 20% 15% Assessment & Evaluation Please refer to the HHS Assessment & Evaluation Policy for a more detailed outline of acceptable practice Evaluation/ Assignments Term work will account for 70% of the final grade and can include assignments, tests, presentations, quizzes, etc. The summative evaluation will account for 30% of the final grade and will include may a culminating project and/or the final examination. Learning Skills All students will be assessed on six learning skills: Responsibility, Organization, Independent Work, Collaboration, Initiative, Self-regulation. The categories for assessment are: Excellent (E), Good (G), Satisfactory (S), and Needs Improvement (N). Tests/Presentation Dates Students who miss a test, presentation, or culminating activity due date will be given an opportunity to complete the test/presentation or submit the culminating activity on the day they return to school or at a time arranged by the teacher, provided the student absence is valid and deemed acceptable. Unacceptable absences will be considered truancies and the student will receive a grade of zero. Extensions Extensions must be negotiated by the student with your teacher up to two days prior to the due date. At the negotiation, the student must present a completed Extension Form. This form must be signed by the parent/guardian, student and teacher. Academic Dishonesty: Plagiarism and/or Cheating Plagiarism is the use or close imitation of the language and thoughts of another without attribution in order to represent them as one’s own original work. Plagiarism or cheating will not be tolerated. A first offense may result in a mark of zero or an opportunity to redo/resubmit the evaluation, after consultation with the student, parent, teacher, Dept. Head and school administration. A second offense will result in a mark of zero, a call home and the student will be referred to the Principal. A third offense will result in a mark of zero and may result in a suspension from school. Exams All students must be available to write exams on the days designated. A mark of zero will be assigned for missed exams unless the student provides a medical certificate, has a court appearance and provides documentation, attends a funeral of a family member or close friend or experiences extenuating circumstances (serious accident/incident). Students who miss exams will be referred to the administration of the school. Textbooks/Course Resources In order to support student learning, textbooks, novels, or other course material may be issued to a student. It is important that the student take note of the textbook number that has been issued to him/her as that is the textbook number that he/she must return to the library. All textbooks/course material must be returned in good condition. Failure to return the same textbook number issued or returning material in poor condition will result in the student being charged for the textbook or course material.
