~Arts & Crafts~
OIL PAINTING: Old master method – Instructor Susannah Roth. You can learn to draw
as you paint and you will be taught how to see shapes and depth of shadows to form
your picture into a painting. $12.00 per class is to be paid at the front desk before each
class. Tuesdays 2:00 - 4:00pm.
SUMMERVILLE WOODCARVERS: This group meets on Thursdays 1:00 – 3:00 pm.

BEGINNER QUILTING: Instructor Linda Knutson teaches quilters the techniques of
hand piecing, machine piecing, appliqué, and more. Tuesdays 1:00 - 3:30pm. Call 7972088 for more information. No class Tuesday, January 21st.

CROCHET: Mary Altrock teaches all levels of crochet. Fridays 10:00–11:15 am
CREATIVE CRAFTERS The Creative Crafters meet monthly to make items from
donated supplies to sell in the Gift Shop. All supplies will be provided. Please join us on
Friday, January 3rd and Friday, January 17th, 1:00 – 3:00 pm. All proceeds are used
to support the services and programs at Dorchester Seniors.
~Education~
SPEAKER: Dr. Jim Erickson, D.C. from Atlantic Coast Physical Medicine will provide
an informational lecture on symptoms and treatments for Neuropathy. Neuropathy is a
result of nerve damage that often causes weakness, numbness, and pain usually in
your hands and feet. Tuesday, January 28th @ 10:00am
BENEFIT BANK: Free service available to seniors that provides a quick check on-line
by a trained volunteer for potential program eligibility for seniors. You may qualify for
programs such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, Medical
Assistance, Rx assistance, and others. If the Quick Check indicates that you may be
eligible for one or more benefits, the application may proceed immediately. The benefit
counselor will advise you of your scheduled appointment and the paperwork you will
need to bring with you in order to begin the process. Monday, January 13th and
Monday, January 27th. Please call 871-5053 for appointment.
CHAIR TRAVEL: Join us as we escape the winter chill and explore some WARMER
sights and sounds of Tahiti and Fiji Islands! Fiji and Tahiti, both exotic and
beautiful, feature colorful similarities and dramatic historical differences. A former British
colony, Fiji is now an independent nation with a diversified economy. Tahiti is even
more scenically dramatic than Fiji. Although Polynesian culture has been suppressed
for more than a hundred years of French influence, Tahiti is still a fascinating place to

BEGINNER SPANISH: Member Marcos Villacreses teaches beginner conversational
Spanish. Marcos is from Ecuador. Mondays 9:15-10:15am

BIBLE STUDY: Ms.Trophelia Ajala leads a non-denominational Bible Study. All faiths

GARDENING: Ron Coffey of the Clemson Master Gardening Program discusses
gardening concerns, and provides beneficial tips to keep your garden and plants
healthy. Tuesday, January 14th @ 1:00pm & Thursday, January 30th @ 10:00am
~Computer Classes~

LEVEL 1 COMPUTER CLASS: Ritha Tuten – Instructor: Learn the very basic
operations of the computer from turning the computer on, using the mouse, and
performing basic functions in Microsoft Word. Tuesdays & Thursdays 9:30-11:30am.
(No class Thursday, January 2nd)
LEVEL 2 COMPUTER: John Zaitz – Instructor: Reviews basic computer skills,
including how to use various applications and the internet. Mondays 1:00 – 3:00 pm.

*TAI CHI: The Tai Chi for Health form is a fun-to-learn, simplified form that is
appropriate for almost everyone, including seniors and those with limited range of
motion. Proven to improve muscular strength, flexibility, balance, posture, and stamina,
as well as lowering blood pressure and strengthening the immune system. Also a
stress management technique, Tai Chi promotes relaxation of the mind through focusing
on the body. Instructor: Sheryl Iwanski-Brown. Tuesdays 2:30-3:45
*WEIGHT TRAINING: Designed to improve muscle strength and bone density, this
class will help tone your body. Bring a towel, mat, and a pair of 3 lb. weights. Instructor:
Ronna Toombs Mondays & Wednesdays 9:00-10:00
*FRIDAY LINE DANCING: Instructor Evelyn Ward. You Must be a member of H2u to
participate in this class. Fridays 12:30-1:30pm
*AEROBICS: Get moving with this class of floor and chair aerobics designed to improve
abdominal tone, strengthen your legs and get your heart rate going! Bring a towel and a
mat. Instructor: Ronna Toombs. Tuesdays and Thursdays 8:30-9:30am
*YOGA: Designed to revitalize your body, relax your mind, increase energy, and reduce
stress. Bring a mat and towel. Instructor: Marlene Cuggy. Tuesdays and Thursdays

FITNESS FUN: Join us for various types of seated exercise such as Salsa, Tai Chi,
Chair Dancing, Boxing, and more. You may stay seated or get up and move- let’s get fit

ZUMBA GOLD FREE TRIAL CLASS: We are excited to be adding Zumba Gold as a
permanent Tuesday evening class with certified instructor, Lilibeth Barker beginning in
February. Come out on Tuesday, January 21st at 6:00pm for a FREE TRIAL class to
learn what it’s all about!
PARACHUTE GAME: Get an upper body work out keeping the parachute in motion to
music. Wednesday, January 22nd @ 10:30am
FITNESS EQUIPMENT TRAINING: Ed Redman, Certified Personal Trainer from YMCA
will be available in the Fitness Room on Tuesday, January 14th from 1:45-2:45pm to
train in the safe use of the fitness equipment.
NUTRITION SERIES: Jean Muller is a Licensed Dietitian/Nutritionist. Jean teaches
monthly classes on eating to stay healthy. With the New Year, she will kick off an
exciting series on how good nutrition helps us age more slowly and more healthy.
January’s topic is “Good Nutrition: Key to Healthy Aging”. Jean will cover how
eating the right foods can fight against aging and disease. She will also cover “What is
a Healthy Diet for Seniors? Topics that will be presented in 2014 include: Eating to
Protect Your Heart; Eating to Stay Strong and Independent; Eating to Protect Your Brain
from Dementia; Eating to Boost Your Mood and Fight Off Depressions; Eating to
Increase Your Energy and Pep. Please join us every month for this exciting and
informative series. Thursday, January 16th @10:00am
BLOOD PRESSURE SCREENINGS: Stop in for a free blood pressure screening with a
nurse from Trident Medical. Thursday, January 9th @ 10:00am

CLOGGING: Put on your dancing shoes & join us as Instructor Julia Tourtellotte
teaches beginner & intermediate level clogging. Wednesdays 1:00-2:30pm.
WALKING CLUB: Walking is one of the easiest ways to get the exercise you need to
stay healthy. Walk to strengthen your heart, lungs, and muscles, help lower blood
pressure and maintain a healthy weight, and also to improve your mood and increase
your energy level. Participate in our “Miles Walked” incentive! If you walk at least 10
miles per quarter (3 months) you will qualify for a special healthy luncheon held
exclusively for members who complete this task. *Note: ALL miles MUST be verified
by group leader, volunteer John Herlihy in order to count toward incentives. We
will also have additional ongoing incentives for members who reach 25 miles and 50
miles. Prizes will be awarded to all members who meet required number of
verified miles for each level. (10, 25 & 50 miles) Group meets in the lobby & walks at
Doty Park. Tuesdays and Thursdays 9:45am
SIT AND GET FIT: Increases circulation without over exertion, improves flexibility and
range of motion, and gradually strengthens and tones muscles, all from a seated
position. Led by Instructor Ed Redmond. Tuesdays and Thursdays 1:00 - 2:00 pm

& Wal-Mart pharmacies (both on Main St.) on Monday, January 6th @ 10:00am. You
MUST call your prescriptions in a day ahead. Transportation Fee= $1.00
~ CARDS, GAMES, & OTHER FUN~
MORNING MOVIE: Come join us for a movie and popcorn on Friday, January 10th
@ 10:00am! We will be watching “The Bucket List” (PG-13) starring Jack Nicholson and
Morgan Freeman. Corporate billionaire Edward Cole and working class mechanic Carter
Chambers have nothing in common, except they both have been diagnosed with terminal
illnesses. While sharing a hospital room together, they decide to make a Bucket List of all the
things they have ever wanted to do before they die. In the process of completing the list, both of
them heal each other, become unlikely friends, and ultimately find the joy in life.
MORNING OLDIE MOVIE: Come join us for a movie and popcorn on Friday, January 31st @
10:00am! We will be watching “Secondhand Lions” (PG) In this family-friendly comedy
drama, Walter (Haley Joel Osment) is a shy and bookish boy just short of his teens whose
mother impulsively decides to leave him for the summer with his eccentric grand-uncles, Hub
(Robert Duvall) and Garth (Michael Caine). Walter isn't especially happy about being left in the
middle of Texas with two old men, while Hub and Garth aren't too pleased to be stuck minding a
boy, especially one who isn't accustomed to hunting, fishing, or firearms. When Walter starts
hearing local gossip about his uncles' wild and wooly pasts, he begins asking a few questions,
and while Hub and Garth don't enjoy having the boy poking into their pasts, as they start telling
tales of their youthful adventures, they find themselves itching for some new adventures in their
lives. Soon Walter is a semi-willing accomplice as his elderly guardians rediscover the wild,
impulsive spirit of youth.

GIANT TOSS GAME: Come try out a NEW fun game tossing beanbags onto a large target on
the floor for points! Easy and fun to do from a standing or seated position! Monday, January

WALKING CLUB “10 MILE” LUNCHEON: Special healthy luncheon and recognition
ceremony held exclusively for members of the Walking Club who achieved the goal of walking at
least 10 miles last quarter (October – December 2013). Thursday, January 23rd @ 11:45
“SENIORS GOT TALENT” SHOW: We know our Seniors have TALENT! This will be a joint
event with St. George Center coming to visit and participate with us! Come out and strut your
stuff, whether it’s singing, acting, comedy, dancing, or WHATEVER! Use your imagination! You
may participate as an individual or in a group! Must sign up and turn in a description of your
talent at the Front Desk by Tuesday, January 21st at 5:00pm. A panel of special guest judges
will choose the top three acts to receive prizes! Friday, January 24th @ 10:00am
BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION: If you are a member of the center & have a birthday in
January, please join us Wednesday, January 29th @ 11:15am for a piece of birthday cake!
Please be sure to put your name on the Birthday sheet in the Rose Rm. Please remember
that cake is only served from 11:15-11:30am.
MEXICAN DOMINOES: also known as Trains. Barbara Fitzgerald teaches this version of
dominoes on Mondays 1:00–3:00 pm. If you have a set a Mexican Dominoes set, please bring
