The Heart and Stroke Foundation – Manitoba Dr. Dexter Harvey Award in Primary Prevention This award was established to promote excellence in research and scholarly activity in the area of primary prevention. The award encourages and supports training for outstanding graduate students and is open to any Master’s or PhD student enrolled for the upcoming year in a Manitoba University program whose project has as its focus primary prevention in the following areas of risk factor reduction: physical inactivity, excess weight, or tobacco smoking. Award Amount: One award with a value in the amount of $5,000 Award Criteria: Demonstrated academic excellence within the Master’s or PhD program in which they are enrolled. Previous or current volunteer experience with HSF would be an asset. Application Process: The following components must be provided in the application process: Complete CV Brief biography (less than 300 words) Brief statement (less than 200 words) on how your work demonstrates innovation and/or potential for policy or practice impact in reducing risk factors for heart disease and stroke in Manitobans Summary of research (including previous accomplishments or current work) that have had impact, or have the potential to impact risk factors for heart disease or stroke (maximum 2 pages) Two references (included in package) from people who can highlight: o Candidate’s academic ability o Examples that demonstrate the candidate’s interest in primary prevention and address the candidate’s potential for success Application Deadline: Wednesday, March 2, 2016 Notification Date: April, 2016 Candidate Selection: HSF-Manitoba’s awards committee, comprised of CEO, Director of Government Relations & Health Promotion and two provincial board members Other: The award may be deferred if a suitable candidate cannot be identified This award can only be received once during a student’s post-graduate program. Research Allowance Guidelines: The funds for this award may be used for: travel to relevant conferences and other academic meetings, applicable research equipment (e.g. pedometers, etc), materials, supplies and other costs directly related to research. These funds may NOT be used to supplement the award recipient’s salary, moving, or for general institutional overhead costs. The research allowance is administered by HSF-Manitoba. Items purchased become the property of the institution. Reporting Requirements: A summary report (2 page maximum) and expenditure report outlining how the funds were used and the impact this award has had on the recipient’s work in the area of primary prevention must be submitted no later than 15 months after the award notification date.
