Course Planning Guide 2016-17
Grade 9 Into Grade 10
PART A: GENERAL INFORMATION
This course planning guide is intended to help you plan your courses for next year. We will try as much as possible to
arrange your courses and schedule for next year based on the choices you make when you complete the actual course
choice form online. You will be assigned to courses based on limits in enrollment AND the eligibility process(es) used for
each course, which may include one or more of the following: grade requirement, application, pre-course work, rigorous
course agreement, or teacher recommendation. Any Honors, Pre-AP, AP, or MUN course requires one or more of
the aforementioned eligibility processes.
Please use the Course Selection Website link to go to the ASFM website for the following documents and videos to help
you plan which courses you want to take next year: Course Planning Guide, Course Planning Guide Video, ASFM
Course Catalog, Grade 10 Course Syllabi, and PowerSchool Class Registration Video.
PART B: CORE COURSES – REQUIRED (2.00 credits total)
1. All students in Grade 10 are required to take:
a. Character Education 10 AND Computer 10 Choice from below (1 semester – 0.50 credit each course, 1.00 total
credit)
b. Modern World History 10 AND Social Studies Seminar 10 Choice from below (1 semester – 0.50 credit each
course, 1.00 total credit) OR MUN 10 OR MUN Secretariat 10-12 (2 semesters – 1.00 credit each course)
c. Spanish 10 OR Spanish Language and Culture (SLC is only for international students)
(2 semesters – 1.00 credit each course)
PART C: CORE COURSES – REQUIRED CHOICES (4.00 credits total)
Please carefully consider your options for the core courses listed below. Be sure to read the course description for each
course on the webpage listed above and review any prerequisites and application processes required for each course.
NOTE: Students taking AP Physics 1 10 will be required to take Advanced Algebra Honors 10 at the same time.

PART D: ELECTIVE COURSES – REQUIRED CHOICES (1.00 credit total)
Please carefully consider your options for the elective courses listed below. Be sure to read the course description for
each course by visiting the webpage listed on page one of this document and review any prerequisites and application
processes required for each course.
You will select a total of eight (8) elective choices for the year ranking them from number 1-8. If we can’t place you in the
elective choice #1, then we would assign you to elective choice #2, #3, etc. However, for the year you will be assigned
only two semester-length electives or one year long elective for your schedule, both are equivalent to a total of 1.00 credit.
We will try as much as possible to arrange your courses for next year based on the choices you make when you complete
the actual course choice form online.
