Guru Nanak College (Autonomous) National Conference on” Innovations in Chemical Sciences (NCIC-2016) The Department of Chemistry and Internal Quality Assurance Cell(IQAC) of Guru Nanak College (Autonomous) in collaboration with Nuray Chemicals Pvt. Ltd., sponsored by DST, UGC,DRDO, New Delhi, TNSCST, Chennai., has organized a three day “National Conference on Innovations in Chemical Sciences-NCIC2016 from 28t to 30th January 2016” to commemorate the 30th year of commencement of M.Sc and Centenary year of Einstein’s Theory of Relativity. The main aim of the conference is to provide a platform for exchange of information between researchers and experts to share knowledge and experiences of innovative techniques and theories to provide research strategies, technical and scientific responses for emerging challenges in chemical science and technology. The conference was inaugurated by Prof. R. Balaram ,Former Director, Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, a Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan and Bhatnagar awardee. Mr. K.G. Sanjeevi Babu, Head, Dept. of Chemistry welcomed the gathering. Special address was given by Sardar Harbans Singh Anand, President, Guru Nanak Educational Society. He briefed on the establishment of the Institution. The College was established in 1971 to mark the 500th birthday of Guru Nanak Devji, by Guru Nanak Educational Society, with Lt.Col G.S.Gill as Founder President and Padmashri P.N.Dhawan as General Secretary. The college also received “A” grade by NAAC in 2013, and Autonomous Status in 2015 by UGC. Dr. M.Selvaraj, Principal, is his presidential address quoted our Honourable Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi’s 5Es namely Economy, Environment. Energy, Empathy Equity, in the field of Scientific Research. He also emphasized on the 4C’s namely Critical thinking, Communication, Collaboration and Creativity which are important in the current scenario. The Chief Guest gave the inaugural address on “Chemistry-the lingua franca of the medical and biological sciences. . Ms. N.Malarvizhi, organizing secretary, proposed the vote of Thanks. The Conference included invited talks, lectures from distinguished speakers of leading research institutions ,oral and poster presentations. Prof. P. Balaram, Former director, IISc, Bengaluru inaugurated the conference on 28th Jan 2016 and in his inaugural address he enlightened the audience with chemistry-the lingua franca of the medical and biological sciences and about chemical ecology. It was followed by key note address by Prof. Sebastian, IISc,Bengaluru. He spoke on ‘Theoretical calculation for energy transfer from a dye molecule to graphene : nano tube, useful for dye sensitized solar cells and i-gates for transistors’. The first invited lecture was given by Dr. G. Anantharaman of IIT Kanpur. He discussed in detail about N-heterocyclic carbenes. It was followed by oral presentation by students and researchers. The second day started with invited lecture by Dr. Sankararaman,Prof. of Chemistry, IIT(M), Chennai . He gave an extended and informative talk on 1,2,3-Triazole -5ylidenes – versatile N-heterocyclic carbon ligands. Synthesis, structures and catalytic studies of their palladium complexes. It was followed by lecture by Dr. A.Ramanan of IIT Delhi. He talked about chemical insight into the world of supramolecule assembleies: designing crystals. Next invited lecture was by Dr. T.P.Sastry from CLRI, Chennai. He gave us an insight into the treatment of cancer through targeted drug delivery and stressed the fact that waste has to be converted into wealth. Then Dr. Shnmugasundaram Sakthivel,Scientist- E, Centre for solar energy materials, ARCI, Hyderabad gave a lecture on Importance of solar energy research in the present scenario. He highlighted the importance of solar energy setting up solar panels and so on. The day ended with poster presentation by participants from various institutions. The last day of the conference was started with a lecture by Dr. Rajakumar, Head, Dept. of organic chemistry, Univ. of Madras. He talked about “ Organic nanomolecules- dream or reality” . This lecture was followed by a talk by Dr.P. Ramamurthy, Director, NCUFP, Chennai who spoke on Acridinedione dyes and nano hybrid materials as fluorescence and colourimetric sensors. Valedictory function was presided over by Dr. S. Narasimhan, Chairman, Asthagiri Herbal Research Foundation, Chennai. The conference proceedings was released by the chief guest and the first copy was received by Dr. S.Balasubramanian, Dept. of Inorganic chemistry, Univ. of Madras. The winners of oral and poster presentation were awrded with cash prizes. The conference was concluded with National Anthem.
