University Policy Governing Computer Use
Diversity College provides access to computer labs and online resources for use by faculty, staff, and
students. The primary use of these resources is intended for academic related work of the campus
community. Diversity College prohibits the theft and/or abuse of its computer facilities and resources.
Theft or other abuse of computer facilities and resources includes, but is not limited to:
●
●
●
●
●
Unauthorized entry into a file to use, read, or change the contents, or for any other purpose.
Unauthorized transfer of a file.
Use of another individual’s identification and/or password.
Use of computing facilities and resources to interfere with the work of others.
Use of computing facilities and resources to send obscene or abusive messages.
Residential Policy Governing Computer Use
The position of the Office of Residential Life, housed within the Student Life Division, regarding
responsible use of computers in the residence halls is compliant with College policy. Additionally,
we feel as though it is important to state that appropriate use of computer resources and access is
extended to personal computers, as well as university labs, networks, and equipment. It is the
responsibility of the students to use their own personal computer in a manner that is consistent with
College policy. Violations may result in the suspension of network or lab use privileges, or other
disciplinary action by the College.

What is facebook.com?
“Facebook is an online directory that connects people
through social networks at schools.”
Facebook.com, created in 2004, is a way for college students to network with other
students at their university or college and build community. Any students, faculty, staff, and alumni
with an email address ending in .edu are eligible for Facebook accounts. There are more than 2,000
colleges and universities listed on Facebook.com and it is estimated that nearly 85% of students at
these institutions are registered with Facebook, with between 10,000 and 20,000 new users signing up
each day.1
Facebook.com allows you to create a profile that contains information about yourself
including your favorite books and movies, hobbies, jobs, and the classes in which you are currently
enrolled. You can even upload photos of yourself to your profile to share with others at Diversity
College. Facebook.com allows you to connect with friends—both at your institution and others
around the nation—join groups, and advertise for events that are happening in your club,
organization, or on campus!
Now we will give you a quick overview of the frequently used features on facebook.com
and direct you to sources for additional information about facebook.com.

How Do I Connect With Others?
On Facebook.com, you can connect with others and build an on-line community at your
institution two ways: (1) through the information you list as a part of your profile, and (2) through
joining groups.
All of the information that is listed in your profile connects you to other students that
lists that same information. For example, let’s say you list your favorite movie as “Wedding
Crashers,” you could click on the title in your profile and it would list all Diversity College students
who list that same movie as one of their favorites. The same searching capability exists for finding
students in your classes. When you list the courses that you are taking, with just one click you can
see all the students who listed that they were in the same class.
Joining a group is another way to connect with other students on Facebook. You are
able to join any public group for Diversity College listed by Facebook.com. These groups are formed
around common interests, such as “People who are involved in Dance Marathon,” or “Yeah, I’m
from Northwest Ohio so What??,” or even “Diversity College Rocks.” You have the ability to search
for groups that exist so that you can join, and if you want, you can create your own group.

What is the ‘Wall’?
The wall is another communication feature offered by facebook.com. You can post a message
on your friend’s wall for everyone to read. Friends can also leave messages for you on your wall, but if you
do not want the message to be left on your wall you can delete messages off of your wall. You also have the
option to disable this function and have the wall removed from your profile.
What is Poking?
According to facebook.com, “we have about as much an idea as you do. We thought it would
be fun to make a feature that had no real purpose and to see what happens from there. So mess around
with it, because you’re not getting an explanation from us.”2 Well, if they won’t, then we will. Poking is a
feature offered on facebook.com that allows you to ‘poke’ another user, meaning when they log on next,
they will receive a message on their profile stating that they have been poked by you. Essentially it lets
you know that the person who poked you has seen that you are a member on facebook.com and possibly
even visited your profile.

How Do I Send a Message?
Communicating with other people on facebook.com is easy:
•
You can choose to send a message while viewing someone's profile by selecting the "Send a
Message" button under their profile picture. This option is also available from the right side of
any “search results” screen.
•
Once you call up the message box, just type a subject and message and click "send." The
person you are messaging will be notified the next time they login.2

Profile Content
Diversity College believes that facebook.com can be a very positive
networking device when used responsibly. As with all advances in technology, there are
side effects, ‘the bad’ per se, of facebook.com. It is our hope that you will use this
education on facebook.com to help you will make informed decisions regarding your
own facebook.com profile.
In this portion of the tutorial, we will outline six (6) questions to consider
when creating your facebook.com profile. These questions relate to the quality of the
content that you post in your profile for all to read. We will then explore the amount of
privacy that facebook.com provides to students within its community.

6 Questions to Ponder About your Facebook.com Profile3
1.
Would I show my profile to my parents? It is wise to start with the old ethical guideline asking
whether you would tell your mother about something you had done or said. If the answer is “yes, I
would show my parents, grandparents, or any other person who I admire my facebook.com profile,”
then you have taken the first step toward constructing an appropriate facebook.com profile.
2. Would I show my profile to a potential employer? Remember, anyone with an .edu email address
can access your profile. This is also now continuing to alumni accounts from colleges and
universities. The amount of people who have access to facebook.com is growing, and potential
employers are using this to their advantage. If you would not want your employer to view your
profile, or if you would not tell your employer the things on your profile during an interview, you
may want to consider changing it.
3. What will my ‘neighbors’ think by looking at my profile? Remember, you are new to the Diversity
College community. Whether it’s the person sitting next to you in class or the roommates next door
on your residence hall floor, people can use your profile to make assumptions about who you are. If
you have never met someone, your profile will be making the first impression of you. How do you
want your neighbors to think of you? Your profile says a lot, so use it to portray yourself in a positive
light.

6 Questions to Ponder About your Facebook.com Profile (cont’d)
4.
Would I put my profile on the front page of a newspaper or on the 6 o’clock news? This is
another ethical guideline you can use when making decisions or actions. If you would not want
your profile out there for all to see, then make the necessary adjustments to ensure you would not
mind having your profile on the front page of a newspaper.
5.
What facebook.com groups am I a part of, what pictures are linked to my profile, and what do
my facebook.com friends say about me? Being appropriate may mean more than just your own
profile. You may say something about yourself by being a member of an inappropriate
facebook.com group. The pictures that are linked to you or your profile may portray yourself
negatively or depict actions you may not want others viewing. Your friends on facebook.com may
also depict something about you – this includes the postings on your wall and the pictures on
their profiles. Take someone off your friend list, delete postings or pictures, or take yourself out of
a group if necessary.
6.
How can I use facebook.com in a positive way? As much as facebook.com is talked about
negatively, it can be used positively. Students across the country are using it as a tool every day.
You can use this tool as a means of communication, as a way to connect with students in your
residence hall community or in your classes, and as a means of self-expression. Just be sure
facebook.com communicates the message you want to send about yourself.

Protecting Your Privacy
You have the option to select different privacy settings on facebook.com that limit who can view your
profile. If you do not use your privacy settings, you should take extra care in considering the information
you are disclosing about yourself.
Some important things to consider regarding your privacy are:
•Is your cell phone number listed on your profile?
Good: none listed
vs.
Bad: 419-867-5309
•Is your address or residence hall room number displayed?
Good: East Campus
vs.
Bad: Conover Hall Rm 513, left side of room
vs.
Bad: January 23, 1989 @ 6:30 am
•Is your birth date listed?
Good: January
•What photos and images of you, your family or your friends are posted on your profile?
Good: Distant Picture of You Smiling
vs.
Bad: Tagged Photos (names) of Family and Friends
The more information that you include in your profile, the easier it is for others to misuse that information.
So please take appropriate measures to protect your information and the information of your closest family
and friends. Remember, if you list their names along with their pictures, their information is now available
to other facebook.com users!
