Handy Hints to
Fundraise
About us
Wiltshire Sight is here to offer information, advice and support to
anyone affected by sight loss and to raise the profile of sight loss in
the local community. Founded in 1919, we serve the local community
of Wiltshire & Swindon. As an independent charity we receive no
statutory funding and rely on the generosity of our supporters and the
local community.
Therefore, every penny raised by our supporters really does make a
big difference to the service we can offer. We simply couldn’t do it
without you, so thank you again for choosing to support Wiltshire
Sight.
What we do now ….
Early intervention
Are you newly diagnosed partially sighted
or blind? Our Moving-On course is aimed
at helping newly diagnosed visually
impaired adults to come to terms with
their condition and access the support
and services they need. The workshops
are held weekly at venues across
Wiltshire and Swindon.
Independence
To give you the information you and your family need to adjust to your
sight loss we run community-based information days and workshops.
These help you to have the confidence to live as independently as
possible.

We want to ensure staff in care
homes and, eventually, Health
and Social Care Settings,
have a better understanding
of:
 Different eye conditions by wearing sim specs, and looking at
posters.
 That staff have an understanding of the importance of lighting
 That staff have an understanding of the importance of colour
contrast

What a difference money makes to Wiltshire
Sight
Please help us to keep our services going
Wiltshire Sight provides practical help and support, delivered directly
into the community, to assist people with sight loss to lead full,
independent, healthy and socially active lives.
We work hard to fill the increasingly large gap left by the reduction in
local health and social care services and, for many people, we are a
valuable lifeline as they struggle to come to terms with their sight loss
and learn how to remain independent.
It costs about £250,000 each year to run Wiltshire Sight and make
everything we now do possible.
Any amount you are able to donate will help us to maintain all of our
services.
Here are just a few examples of what a donation
could fund;
 £10 would pay for an individual to receive emotional support via the
telephone.
 £25 would pay for an individual to learn how to be safer in their Kitchen
and remain Independent in their own home.
 £50 would pay for one of our community drop in’s for up to
20 individuals to receive Information Advice, Support and Access to
Resources.

Top Fundraising hints and tips
Find the ideal event space.
Think carefully about the sort of space you’ll need. Indoor or outdoor?
Big or small?
What facilities do you need?
And don’t forget to tell the venue it’s for charity – you may get a
reduced rate. Give yourself time before you set the date, make sure
you’ve given yourself plenty of time to get everything sorted, and for
people to put it in their diaries. Pick a date that’s easy for people, like
the weekend – or a Friday, if you’re doing something at work.
Make a budget
Work out what you hope to raise, once you’ve covered your costs. If
you need equipment, see if you can borrow it rather than buying it.
You can also cut costs by asking local businesses to donate prizes.
Set your target and share it
Once you’ve set your fundraising goal, tell everyone! Seeing how
you’re progressing helps inspire people to give generously.

Spread the word
Tell people why you’re doing your event. Your
personal reasons will really help motivate your
supporters. Facebook and Twitter are ideal for
inviting and updating people. If possible, write
a blog about your progress. It doesn’t have to
be a masterpiece, it just keeps your supporters
involved
Ways to boost your fundraising
Organise a raffle
Ask friends, family or local businesses to donate prizes. Sell raffle
tickets at your event and make sure you announce the winner at the
end. Raffles can raise a lot of money and create a real buzz!
Girls night in
Have a girly night in, give your friends a manicure and paint their nails
pink for a small fee. Ask friends and family to donate what they would
have spent on a night out.
Ensure it’s a sell out
Advance ticket sales means guaranteed donations. Make sure you let
as many people as possible know about your event by providing
information about buying tickets on Facebook and Twitter, your
JustGiving page and posters in your workplace or around your local
area.

Let them eat cake
Have a ‘Guess the weight of the cake’ contest. Just remember to
weigh it first so you know who wins before you eat it!
Friday night at the pub
Invite everyone to a charity evening at your local pub. Be a quizmaster
(you can download a quiz from the internet) and ask teams to pay to
take part. Get local businesses to donate the prizes and hold a raffle
to boost your fundraising total.
Hair today gone tomorrow
Get sponsored to shave off your hair or dye it pink. You’ll be amazed
at how much you can raise.
Sweet charity
Guess the number of sweets in the jar – ask everyone to pay to play
and the winner gets all the sweets!
No smoking beyond this point!
Chocolate, alcohol, smoking – whatever your vice, get sponsored to
give it up, even if it’s only for a month.

they find it both challenging and rewarding.

it provides an opportunity to:

 Make a difference to the
lives of others
 Help others less fortunate or
without a voice
 Feel valued and part of a
