• Scavenger Hunt
© 2015 NMSU Board of Regents
Objectives
• Explain Open Textbooks
and OER
• Identify 2 sources for
Open Textbooks
• Locate 2 OER
repositories
Why use open textbooks?
● Nationwide 65% of students choose not to
buy a college textbook because of cost
● 94% report that they suffer academically
because of this choice
● 48% say they altered which classes they
took based on textbook costs, either taking
fewer classes or different classes
● On average students spend $1,200 a year on textbooks

The Student Survey Says...
● $0-100 = 6
● $101-200 = 17
● $201-300 = 33
●
More than $300 = 48
NMSU is doing better than the national average-- only 32% of respondents said
they did not purchase all their books. How does one effectively teach when a third
of your class has never read the book?
