COURSE REQUIREMENTS & MEDICAL SCREENING The profession of Occupational Therapy is both physically and mentally demanding, requiring a level of fitness to practice. In order to register with the Health Professions Council to practice at the end of your course you will be required to complete a health declaration. It is important, therefore, that any health problems are identified before commencing this course. As a condition of entry onto the BSc Occupational Therapy course, you are required to complete a Medical Questionnaire (which will be treated in the strictest confidence) and an immunisation card (green – see below). These will have been sent to you during June-July 2013 – you have been asked to complete and return these to the Admissions Department at Brunel University. If you are not able to complete these by the beginning of Freshers Week please bring them with you to enrolment. If not completed the card you will not be able to go out on your first placement in March (BSc) / April (MSc). Obtaining these immunisations and an up-to-date record can take time, especially the Hepatitis B, therefore it is essential that you start this process as soon as possible before coming to university. You can only commence the course if you have received AT LEAST the first injection for Hepatitis B. You should then proceed to have your 2nd injection in Term 1 so that you have had at least two injections before you go on placement. The ALL immunisations must be completed by the end of December ready for the first Practice Placement at the beginning of March (BSc) / April (MSc). GETTING THE CARD COMPLETED AND COSTS If you have difficulty obtaining these immunisations or tests from your GP we advise you to go to your nearest travel clinic and arrange to have them done there. You are responsible for obtaining these immunisations and any charges levied in obtaining them; nearly all G.P practices charge for immunisations, unfortunately this is cost you will have to bear. You must have your GP or the clinician at the travel clinic A. COMPLETE each section of the “Green Card” showing dates for all the below immunisations B. SIGN each section to confirm you have received the immunisation C. STAMP each section of the card for each immunisation with the Practice stamp The immunisations required are: Hepatitis B (6 month course of 3 injections) - you should have received your 1st injection before commencing the course and then have your 2nd injection during Term 1. BCG - this can be verified by confirmation of a BCG scar by your GP or through medical records or via the Mantoux test Tetanus - you should be covered by a Tetanus booster which will last at least 5 years Polio - you should be covered by a Polio booster which will last at least 5 years You must also present evidence of your immunity status for the below viruses - this applies to MALE and FEMALE students – this can be acquired by a blood test from your GP, through your medical records: Rubella (German Measles) Measles (MMR) Varicella Zoster (Chicken pox) If you have a query about these requirements please contact Ann Haddock (01895 267612) or Nicola Walters (01895 268780)
