Capstone Project Introduction 2.1 The initial idea Vietnamese food is truly unique, delighting the palate with its distinctive, yet delicate, flavors and textures. Increasingly famous worldwide with restaurants sprawled over the globe, yet no Vietnamese food abroad can equal in flavor or quality to that made in Vietnam itself. Vietnam has a rich eating out tradition. Most of the dishes can be made at home, but many Vietnamese prefer to eat out. In recent years, apart from the rapid increase in foreign tourists coming to Vietnam, that Vietnamese living standard has been dramatically leveled up is one of the most important factors leading the significant development of Vietnamese restaurants over the nation serving Vietnamese people’s needs. Though walking along the years with history, there have been still numerous unsound points existing in restaurant management at Vietnam. Not like in developed countries with modern technologies, restaurant processes in Vietnam, absolutely not less sophisticated than any that of others, are almost managed manually. It is quite an everyday hard-won puzzle for restaurant managers to face with tons of stuff and things. Those may how many customers in and out, how many among them are the first to come or the loyal ones, how many items are available in stock, which one needs to be in the safety stock list. Capstone Project Document Furthermore, how satisfied customers are with meals served, how often they come here and will they ever come to this restaurant once again, are always the ones that every restaurant manager needs to have the answer. In the other hands, customers’ demands have also been rapidly increasing day by day. They ask for the right to be known as the loyal ones with places they often come and also want to have the right for providing feedback with every aspect they pay attention to. Those ones are somehow challenges to restaurant managers but inconveniences to customers. Being Vietnamese food lovers, it comes up to our mind an idea of developing a system that may, in some way, eliminate those insensible feelings for not only restaurant managers but also cuisine lovers by providing restaurant managers easier ways to manage things and serve customers with highest quality services. The system furthermore will also come with ever-existed approaches for customers to enjoy cuisines. 2.2 Business outline To have meal at a restaurant is a trend that is increasing sharply in any country. For example, in America, up to 2010, it’s predicted that restaurant industry would reach the revenue of $577 billion per year. With the growth speed, Vietnam is one of countries following the trend. Many restaurants are open. The small investors are seeking individual unique in its style of services, the largest restaurant systems are expanding and maintaining their brands. Foreign investors also participated in this market with the advantages of capital and brand. Competitiveness in the food business in Vietnam is increasingly stronger to survive and grow. Restaurants in Vietnam are growing in number and quality, diversity and richness of style, type of services. Vietnam traditional cuisine is increasingly appreciated in the world of sophistication and being good for health. Vietnam's tourism is booming. Vietnam's economy is developing well. It is very possible elements for a national brand, "the world's kitchens. Restaurant business in Vietnam is defined as a rapidly profitable industry, and many rich persons are expected business investment and want to think about owning a restaurant. Although not everyone is trading successfully and each year there are a series of restaurants to be transferred, changed the size or closed. According to many studies, restaurant management and marketing play an important part of being successful in this kind of service industries. Nowadays, information technology grows as a storm. It’s indispensable in our life. In the trend of globalization, the application of information technology into all aspects of the economy is a particularly important. In the case of restaurant industry, IT is applying much more in management and marketing. Software is integrated in detail the process of managing the Capstone Project Document restaurant business: sales manager, export-import raw materials, inventory management, food management, table, invoice management, supplier management; customer management (VIP ...), asset management, timekeeping, pay staff salaries… When living standard is improved, the spiritual life has been enhanced as a consequence. And then, cuisine is not just a physical need, but it has also become art which requires aesthetics, high-level sophistication. In that trend, the website about food, restaurants and more launched, making business activities in this area must think of the solution strategy for the race to market. One of them is a website design solutions is impressive, reaching the highest aesthetic, rich in charm and efficient operation. Website is not only for introducing purpose, but also a way to get customers’ comments and the online method to do restaurant business online, such as: purchasing food online. 2.3 Limitations of the existing system Because of the demand, there is tons of software, which supports restaurant management, such as: iPOS, QueenSmart RMS, Bao Tho Restaurant 2009, sG Restaurant…. The process of managing the restaurant business is so complex, including many related phases: sales manager, export-import raw materials, inventory management, food management, table, invoice management… Therefore, to develop complete and professional software for the business is not so easy. There are some limitations of the existing systems: graphic interface is not friendly and easy to use with too many tables and sheets; lack of some functions in process, accounting management part is complex; inventory is not so effective… Nowadays, many hardware and software providers are supporting the business with PDA and Wi-Fi to increase effectiveness of services. However, restaurant environment, security and capital investment are not allowed. It seems impractical in general restaurants today. VIP card and card to manage the attendance of employees is not supported effectively. Not so many restaurants have their own website. They only use offline marketing to advertise their business. Others have their own website, but it’s just an HTLM web to show the information of the restaurants. Summarily, people don’t often think of online services as a tool of making business and marketing. One of rare food buying websites is comtamcali.com. The web is quite good with nice interface also supported English. However, it works from 7a.m until 10:30a.m. One of the most important things in management is assessment and predictions of its business situation in near future. This feature lacks in all restaurant management software now. Capstone Project Document So, it’s really hard to carry on and think of strategy to improve business situation and make profit as well. 2.4 Improvement Objectives Restaurant management is the new field which has its own business domain. The domain needs much time to study and research in theory and practice. To do project, we will be able to understand some parts of restaurant management and related phases, such as: human resource management, salary management… To carry on the project as a real project helps us improve the project management skill, including: time management, communication management… We have to create software as the product, so we need to use technologies we studied. From that, we have chance to practice and review knowledge we learnt. 2.5 Benefits of expected system Restaurant management comprises of an array of functions that include management operations, front desk operations, and kitchen and warehouse operations to name a few. Restaurant management software offers the management and all departments in a restaurant the tools to manage restaurant through software while tracking record of every bit and piece. Restaurant software also offers handy management tools i.e. reporting, inventory tracking in real-time, customer information for improved service and permits flexible product pricing configuration with checks to prevent your staff from selling at lower than designated rates. Saving time on inventory can be a great help to many restaurants. Many hours are spent counting goods and supplies, as well as ordering and delivery. When a restaurant management team uses the service, it can eliminate all the guesswork and counting out of tracking inventory. They will be informed of the inventory status at all times, therefore they know what needs to be ordered before the restaurant runs out. As the development of information technology, cards are playing a vital part in our life. In the developed countries, people avoid storing cash in their wallet and cards are used instead. Normally, Japanese people have about 10 cards in their wallet including Visa card, ATM cards, Bus card, Railway card, Meal card… Moreover, the card is also embedded into handheld devices to enhance the convenience for customer. Without doubt, using cards is the trend for all countries. Grasp the trend, we propose Felica card in our system to support for the promotion (each time customer pay the bill, they will get some point which will be store in the card. When Capstone Project Document the accumulated score is high enough, the bill will get discounted). We choose Felica instead of some other card such as Mifare due to some reasons. - Felica is reliable. - Felica is durable. - Felica has high speed communication. - Felica has high security. - Felica is good at anti-collision. Purchasing food online saves time for customers to have their meal. The website becomes a method to do business and marketing as well. When customers’ comments are left, restaurant managers have information to think of improvement in quality of their products and services. Using algorithm, data mining is executed basing on the real data of restaurant. The process provides the development trends and relationship between entities within the restaurant.
