A Presentation to AIAA Students at Mississippi State University 14 October 2013 Who We Are • The world’s largest technical society dedicated to the global aerospace profession • The Mission: to address the professional needs and interests of the past, current, and future aerospace workforce and to advance the state of aerospace science, engineering, technology, operations, and policy to benefit our global society • The Institute is the principal voice, information resource, and publisher for aerospace engineers, scientists, managers, policymakers, students, and educators Almost Every Major Advancement in the Aerospace Sciences and Engineering Has Been Made by an AIAA Member 2 Our Past and TODAY • Established in 1963 by merging two great aerospace societies The American Rocket Society (founded in 1930 as the American Interplanetary Society) – Science fiction writers and editors; performed own experiments The Institute of the Aerospace Sciences (founded in 1933 as the Institute of the Aeronautical Sciences) – Scholars and professionals; amazing library/collection • Today, the AIAA is: Over 30,000 professional members in 85 countries; over 7,000 student members in over 150 student branches worldwide – 20 technical conferences, 8000 papers per year – 7 technical journals, hundreds of books, and an electronic library of all papers and journal articles since 1963 (some back to 1930) – Short courses, standards, public policy – The AIAA Foundation 3 Our Purpose and Promise • Purpose: To ignite and celebrate aerospace ingenuity and collaboration, and its importance to our way of life This is a visionary profession AIAA celebrates and shares our community’s great accomplishments – from small yet brilliantly simple innovations that affect everyday lives to great discoveries and missions that fuel our collective human drive to explore and accomplish the amazing • Promise: To be your vital lifelong link to the aerospace community and a champion for its achievements This is a constant, vital community In a world where most of us change jobs, organizations, and career paths more than ever before, AIAA is a constant – providing continuity as an ongoing source for learning, lasting community, professional connections, and career development 4 In This Organization… • We: Cover a diverse breadth of workforce that is part of the coolest, most interesting, most essential profession on earth Offer a unique multi-disciplinary community not found elsewhere Invite the community into discussion with each other, prospective partners or thought leaders/innovators Publish content not available anywhere else Work to get the profession recognized for making the world safer, more connected, more accessible and more prosperous Work to protect jobs, and create more opportunities for current aerospace professionals, and a pipeline of future professionals Focus on the future and build excitement for new frontiers Encourage people inside/outside profession to get inspired, enthusiastic and energized 5 In This Organization… • Our Members: Have made nearly every modern discovery or significant advancement in aerospace Meet/talk to people who’ve made the discoveries, written the books, published the research, completed the missions Find a lifelong home for professionals who want to develop career paths and have more career mobility; find mentors; transfer skills from technical to managerial roles; learn how to work in team-based environments Get in on ground floor of new thinking, best practices, stimulating idea exchanges (sparks that can lead to the next brilliantly simple innovation or amazing major discovery) Are offered opportunities to give back (through leadership, mentoring, telling the aerospace story, sharing ideas) 6 Career Advantages of Membership • Jump starting career advancement Meet people you might never encounter—your next employer, boss, mentor or important colleague: • Building skills for the future Get in on the latest technical knowledge to help you in your current job and learn the softer skills that position you for promotion • Exchanging ideas that matter Dialog with like-minded peers, thought leaders with unique expertise, innovators making the breakthroughs • Giving back Help shape the profession;
