Nursing by Nancy Goad Offer BSN, PN and HCA. 3 options in BSN 1. 4 year generic program. 2 intakes (Jan and Sept.) 2. 3 year fast track program. Just graduated the first class. 3. LPN access option. For practicing LPNs. They get into 2nd year of BSN. Need good marks to get in. LPN program now a 2 year diploma. 10 months in first year and 9 months in 2nd year. Provincial curriculum. 32 students per intake. Course work in Chilliwack. Clinical in Chilliwack and Abbotsford. Intense program. BSN: Students coming from high school can come only for January intake (not Sept of the year they graduate). So students can take some courses in fall. They usually take courses for which they can get credit in BSN program. BSN and LPN have widely overlapping skills, same kind of courses, only the depth is different. There has not been much change to the BSN program. It has remained stable. Only change is the new fast track- 3 year program. LPN has changed in terms of the number of years. Now it is a two year program. New 3 credit Biology and Physiology course required for LPN. This Anatomy and Physiology course was earlier offered at UFV as part of LPN. Now they are hoping to offer this as a stand alone course. Students can currently take this online or at other institutions. Both LPN and RN: take entrance requirements points for GPA, essay, volunteer work, interview (based more on critical thinking and character), references from volunteer work. Need minimum 30 hours of volunteer work. More hours more points (subject to maximum points in this category). Some students have moved from BSN to LPN, if BSN is not the right fit for them. 2. Certified Dental Assistant by Rosie Friesen 10 month program. Characteristics of this professions What does a CDA do? Obviously assist the dentist. In addition to this , they do independent work as well. For eg. take X rays, polish teeth, place fissure sealants. Never a dull moment. Most students come directly from high school. Who would be a good CDA? Some one who: Loves working with people Has a good manual dexterity Wants to work in a health profession Good alternative option for a health professional. Job Market? 2/3rd are hired before completion of the program. Employment remains constant. Wage $18 to $20 starting. Admission: Not very long waitlist. Nursing has a long waitlist. Point system. Points for those who work in service industry like Macdonalds etc. Points for GPA. 3. Health Care Assistant by Giannina Bocsanu Short 24 weeks course About 13 weeks in class and rest in labs and practicum. 2 intakes per year. Starting salary $15 to $21. Work in shifts. Health care is open 24 hours. Sometimes work casual for the first few years. Private facility pay lower salary $15 to $17. Admission: Gr. 11 English, 6 post secondary credits, first aid, CPR level C, Volunteer hours minimum 30 hours, valid drivers license (not new or learners). During practicum they are paired with a health care worker and have to follow that person on home visits etc. They cannot ride in the same car due to liability issues. English 11, not Communications 11. Biology 12 is recommended. Tuition $3230.44 plus books , student fees. Total $4055.00 Tatoos, piercings etc might be a problem when working with elderly. Students have to deal with a variety of situations. Common situation is death and dying. Some younger students are not prepared for this. HCA does not have laddering at UFV. They can go to other institutions like VCC or private colleges. Openings: there is push from health authorities to keep the elderly at home with some support and also to reduce to hospital time. So more demand for HCAS. Hours are flexible. 4. Theatre by Bruce Kirkley Explore your passion. 5 Program options Diploma Associate Degree BA Minor or Extended Minor BFA Minor or Extended Minor Bachelor of Media Arts (Theatre is a big part of this newer program under development) Small class size. 206 seat Theatre. Small studio space. Theatre Diploma: is a 2 year program. Ladders into BA or BFA. Hands on program. Associate of Arts: Transfers to other BC universities Extended Minor or minor in BA or BFA: Careers in business, sales, public relations, theatre film, television, teaching, media, communications, digital media. Program teaches one how to listen. Students will learn acting, stage management, life skills, professional development like to accept responsibility, to assert oneself, work in a team setting, communicate effectively, written and oral, critical thinking. Students critique others and analyze their own work. Develop leadership skills. Can work as managers, designers, directors at festivals. Great community of alumni, current students and instructors. There is a lasting friendship. Great support from the Fraser Valley Community. Most scholarships to offer. 5.
