You have been asked to make a short presentation for a “classe de terminale” from the
outskirt of Paris visiting your school, interested in New Zealand, in particular immigration.

In your presentation you could attempt to persuade and justify why immigration has
been and still is a positive phenomenon for New Zealand and France. You could….

Contrast immigration in both countries- consider countries of origins, reasons
for immigrating, rules of immigration, changes taking place in the laws etc.
You may use statistics to support your statements
Present the positive and potentially negative aspects of immigration
Look at measures taken to support immigrants integration and consequences
when these measures failed
Discuss the forms of racism and discrimination people/you might encounter
and explain why

Task 1 - Term 1
You have been invited to take part in an online debate with our French partner school in
Paris. As a group, you are discussing the causes and effects pollution has on our
environment. You need to compare and contrast the facts and figures you have come across
both in class and in your own research. What are the similarities and differences between
France and New Zealand. Do you feel either country does better in curbing pollution? What
could be done better? Can either country learn from each other?
Task 2 - Term 2 ‘France et Nouvelle-Zélande: deux pays uni, bi ou multiculturels?
Our French partner school is visiting soon. You wish to explain and are discussing the
difference between multi-cultural society and a bi-cultural society. Is France a multi-cultural
society? Is New-Zealand a bi-cultural society? You could attempt to define what each one is
and explore the similarities and differences between the two terms. You could discuss how
well those terms apply to New Zealand and France and try to justify your opinion using
specific examples.
Task 3 – Term 3 ‘Vision de l’amour et du partenaire idéal’
Following some work on love and relationship in your class, where you were asked to
prepare a questionnaire with your partner, you bring in either an article or a questionnaire
from a French magazine discussing love and the ideal partner. You will discuss your reaction
to this article and compare and contrast your findings with New Zealand attitudes and
beliefs. You will also negotiate what questions should be included in your questionnaire with
your friend, supporting your choices.
I am still thinking about this one… it is a little rough on the edges.

Task 1 - Term 1- « La production d’énergie et ses conséquences sur l’environnement en
France et en Nouvelle Zélande »- Energy production and its impact on the Environment in
France and New Zealand
During an exchange visit with our French partner school in Paris, you have been asked to
write an article for a school magazine about comparing energy problems in France and New
Zealand and possible alternatives, explaining which you feel meets best the need of a safe
and clean environment in the short and long term.
You could write about
 How energy is produced presently in both countries
 and how this impact on the environment
 What are possible alternatives, looking at positive and negative aspects of the solutions
offered
 Propose what you feel is the best alternative and justify your opinion.
Task 2- Term 2 :“L’amour en ligne en France et en Nouvelle Zélande”
You have read several articles discussing the way technologies changed the way people meet
and relate to each other in France and will write an information booklet for our French
exchange students visiting New Zealand, comparing and contrasting the two countries. You
will need to research this topic and may use the finding of the survey prepared for your
speaking task. You will need to explore the potential advantages and disadvantages of those
changes, including your understanding of cyber-safety. You are expected to include some of
your own comments, and as this is addressing young people, illustrations and humour would
be appropriate.

Task: Prepare a spoken presentation for the wedding context described above.
Your school is looking to enhance the learning experience of French students and is seeking
a new travelling destination. Students have been asked to give a 2 minute presentation in
French, about a French speaking country of your choice. The aim is to convince the rest of
your class that your destination is the best!
 You will be presenting facts about the destination and might want to include
information on:
 Its geography (landscape, weather, average temperature, rainfall..)
 The ease of travelling from New Zealand (type of transport, cost, length..)
 Its history
 Its sites
 Activities one can do
 Anything else you feel is relevant.

Task 1 - Term 1- New technologies
You are discussing the use of technology with your friend. You may discuss the use of cellphone, social networks or the internet, their potential and positive outcomes for you and
other people’s lives as well as the potential or real negative impact of their use. You could
refer to specific statistics or/and use your personal experience.
Task 2 - Term 2
You have run out of reading material and are asking help from your friend, for some books
she would recommend. This is an informal discussion, you want to find out details such as
the author and the title, but you are also curious about the plot, the characters and the style
of writing.
Task 3 - Term 2
You are calling a radio host to discuss either recommend or criticise the latest movie or
band. This is an informal discussion, with at least two people (radio host+caller). The host
has to introduce the topic of discussion and make a controversial comment, where as the
caller reacts.
Listener will need to find out the title, artists etc and the discussion can involve details on
the plot, the characters and the style… as well as personal comments about radio host and
caller!
Task 4 - Term 1
You are chatting with a friend about the school ball. You can discuss gowns, hair, makeup,
friends, issues with self-image and pressure you feel around you and how hard it is to be a
teenager. You could include a bit of wishful thinking in this…
Task 5 - Term 3
You are reacting to a survey written by the principal on healthy eating and the tuck shop in
your school. You will be answering the survey and discussing it with your friends, as you go.
Task 6 - Term 3
You are applying for a job for a travel agent. You want to make a good impression and you
discuss with your friend the things which might impress your future employer and secure
the job. This could include any work experience you have had, your personal qualities, but
also your own travelling experience and dreams, and your motivation to work for them.

Task 1: You are writing a news article for your school blog, read by your partner school.
The discussion point is whether advertising can be informative, encouraging creativity and a
positive force in our lives or simply a form of manipulation, encouraging over-spending,
stereotypes and sexism. You will need to discuss both side of the argument, give specific
examples, and articulate your own view and opinion.
Task 2: You are writing the review of a film or a novel you read recently for Amazon France.
You will describe the plot and describe the main character, as well as express your overall
opinion. Remember to illustrate your points, give specific examples, and articulate your
views and opinion.
Task 3: You belong to a chat room and are discussing the merit of a type of music/band
online. This is a semi-formal piece of writing and you will need at least one partner to
complete this work at home.
You will express your opinion but also react to what is written.
Task 4: You came across a survey describing people’s favourite music in France and you are
surprised by the results. You will find a similar survey in New Zealand and will write a report,
comparing the two countries, showing similarities and differences and express your surprise
and opinion at some of those results.
Task 6: You are preparing a report on Student’s leisure activities (nature, frequency, place)
and their motivation. You will prepare a survey (in Survey Monkey), ask some of your friends
to answer it online and write a report.
Task 7: You have been asked by your French teacher to research and find out about what
French people’s habits were when on holiday. You have to produce a report explaining what
they do, where they go, with whom, how much they spend….. You have been asked to note
changes in trends and any reason you can find. Remember to quote your sources and feel
free to include pictures and graphs to make this visually interesting.
Task 8: You are writing a letter to a friend in France describing your latest holidays. You
want it to be light hearted and entertaining, so you will include some funny anecdotes. You
might want to include not only things you did and saw but future plans and things you do
not wish to ever experience again.
Task 9: You are writing a letter asking for advice in a woman’s magazine. You are explaining
your shopping habits. You are either looking for specific shops, or for a specific item you
cannot find and you wish to make savings or you are a ‘shopaholic’ and you need help. This
is a semi-formal piece of writing.

Task 1 - Term 1
You are preparing a role-play for an assembly showing the difficulties, misunderstandings
and anger occurring when teenagers and their parents try to communicate. You are
concentrating on an everyday situation such as household chores and daily routine habits
and want to attempt reconciliation.
Task 2 - Term 2
You are chatting with your friend about what there is to do for young people and where
they can go/ hang out in their spare time, in their area of Auckland. You could express
opinions about what is good, not so good and what you would like to change or improve.
Remember to ‘name drop’ regularly.
Task 3
You meet with a friend and discuss your week-end, and discover something untoward
happened….
Remember to include a variety of activities, where they took place, with whom, how you felt
about them and of course your feelings after The Discovery.
Task 4 My holidays
We have just come back from our July holidays and we are catching up in class after the
break. Discuss with another member of the class what you did during the holidays, how you
enjoyed it etc.
Task 5 - Term 3
You are speaking with your tutor, discussing daily habits and how they affect your health.
You might want to include information about eating, sleeping and exercise regime. You
could give your opinions about substance abuse (smoking, alcohol and drugs). You could
also explain how you avoid being sick and what you do when you are.
Task 6- Term 3
You are two agony aunts on a school radio talk school. You are responding to e-mails and
messages left to you relating to friendship or relationship problems. You could include
advice, guidance, relate personal opinions and experiences or suggest professional help.

Task 1 - Term 1- Je les trouve….
Your teacher has organised some NCEA tasks with the boys’ school and you are chatting
about the boys you met after the first session. Your class rule is that you may chat, but only
if chatting in French. You may comment on their physical aspect, their character and
personality and of course may disagree!
Task 2 - Term 1- On présente sa maison
Your French exchange partner is arriving soon and you want to prepare for their arrival.
You will take one of your French class partner around your house, showing her various
rooms and answering their questions. Remember to include comments on decoration,
furniture, where things are and what you like and dislike about the house. It would be good
to comments and compare your home with your friend’s home.






Task 4 - Term 2
You are visiting a town in a French speaking country or are a French tourist in NZ and you
get lost and ask for help from a passer-by. You will either be the tourist or the passer-by and
you will use a map of a town as a prompt. The tourist will start by presenting the situation
(where you want to go/ why…) and the passer-by will give an appropriate response. The
conversation could include depending on your role:
Asking for directions to several venues, including the best means of transport to get there.
A request for details on various activities in the area/ possible transports/ attractions etc
Some details about where you are staying/ what you are doing in this country
Opinion about the area and reasons for this.
Giving detailed directions to one specific venue, then general directions for various venues
and some opinions about most appropriate mean of transport and value of the visit there
Questions about the tourist such as reasons for the trip, whether they enjoy the area etc
Anything else appropriate in this setting

Mixture of 2011/2012
Task 1
You are responding to an e-mail for a house exchange, describing your home, including
location, rooms and furniture. You could comment and compare the houses and the rooms
if you wished to.
Task 2
You are writing a blog about your daily life in New Zealand. Your audience is a French school
who are hoping to learn more about what awaits them when they arrive here on exchange.
You could include information about your daily routine, school life and your leisure activities
and those of your friends.
Task 3
Your teacher has created a webpage showing what there is to do in your area and people
have already been contributing comments. You will add your own comments on what was
included about your town, pointing out possible omissions and disagreements. You are also
expected to react to other people’s opinion and express your own.
Task 4 Term 2
You are asked to write an article on holiday habits, such as where people go, how they
travel, where they stay, what they do on holiday. Your class friends will answer a
questionnaire online, using ‘Survey Monkey’ and you will report in writing on your findings.
These findings should include the general trends and some reasons for possible changes in
people’s habits.
Task 5 Term 3
You visited a French restaurant with your friends or family. However, your experience in the
restaurant was one of the worst you have ever had. Your family asks you to write a letter of
complaint listing all the things that went wrong.
You could include: issues with the reservation, what had been promised but was not
offered, the state of disrepair and/or cleanliness of the restaurant, the attitude of staff and
any other relevant information you wish to include.
Remember: you need to write formally and express your discontent with the situation,
albeit politely.
Task 6 Term 2
You are texting your French friend to arrange meeting her/him for a leisure activity. Make
sure you discuss the plans and mention possible obstacles. You may include other details
about your life, as one would in a real life situation. Remember that texting is quite informal
and close to speech- As this is an assessment you are still expected to write whole words and
AVOID abbreviations.
Not that successful… Too many colloquialism- a few nice things, but not the best
Task 4 Term 2
You are writing in the style of a ‘roman-photo’. Your characters are discussing their weekend, reminiscing, when they discover something distressing…. This task will include written
dialogues as well as narration, and some reference to leisure activities.

Task 5 Term 2
You are writing about young people’s favourite leisure activities in New Zealand now and in
the past, drawing a few conclusions as to why those changes took place. You may base your
article on your own research or on findings from others, as long as this is referenced. As this
is for a French online school newspaper, you may want to use a lighter and somewhat
informal style, adding a touch of humour.
Task 3 Term 2
You are writing a postcard to a French friend whilst on holiday in New Zealand. You will
remember to include greetings, explain where you are, what you are doing and include
some opinions and justifications.
2013- so far this year…
Task 1- Term 1 Les stars: opinions
You are on Facebook with some French and New Zealander, discussing who are your
favourite stars. Explain why you have chosen this star and react to your friends comments.
Not always successful- weaker student wrote very short & simple sentences and tended to
repeat themselves- as they would on Facebook.
Task 2- Term 1 On décore la maison d’une amie
You have been asked by a French client to redecorate their house. You are to prepare a
brief , with fabric, wall paper and furniture samples as well as a written description of at
least two rooms in your client’s house.
Task 2b- Term 1 Jeux décoration maison
You have been asked by your French teacher to prepare a board game to practise various
structures and agreements linked to house description. You need to include some written
instructions and part of the game will include written descriptions including fabric and wall
paper patterns, colours and furniture for at least two rooms of a house.
