The support of our Patrons is most appreciated as well. 2 “GIVE MY REGARDS TO BROADWAY” General Rules 1. This flower show will comply with the objectives and standards established by the National Garden Club, Inc. (NGC) for a Standard Flower Show. 2. Design classes are open to all members of the Ribault Garden Club and the National Garden Clubs. Horticulture classes are open to all amateur gardeners. 3. The NGC Handbook for Flower Shows (HB) / shall be used by exhibitors and judges as the authority for the governing of this Show. The NGC Standard System of Awarding will be used with blue (90+), red (85+), yellow (80+) and white (75+), honorable mention ribbons presented as merited. HB 5-7. 4. Native plants on the Florida Conservation List or the State Invasive list can ONLY be used in all classes and divisions, provided such plants are labeled with the botanical name and have been grown by the exhibitor or otherwise legally obtained. 5. The use of fresh plant material is encouraged throughout the show. No artificial plant material (flowers, leaves, fruits or vegetables) will be allowed. 6. Safe guarding of all properties will be exercised, but the Committee cannot assume liability for damages or loss of personal property or injury. All properties must be marked with the exhibitor’s name. 7. Exhibits shall be entered as follows: Horticulture – Amy Wilson will provide entry cards prior to the show. On Thursday, September 25th, all plant entries will be received between the hours of 2-4 pm and cut specimens, Friday, September 26th will be received between 8-9:15 am. Circles will be provided specific times to bring in entries. 8. Design entries must be pre-registered and will be allowed Thursday, September 25th between 4-7pm. Design consultants must sign off indicating that each design entry has been accepted before exhibitor can leave. No late entries will be accepted. 9. Judging will begin at 10:00 am on Friday, September 26, 2014. During judging, the Flower Show Chairman, Horticulture, and Design Chairmen must be on site. The practice of identifying on the entry card that the exhibit earned a score of 90+ is required when Student Judges are in competition. All such entry cards must be signed by an NGC Accredited Judge on the judging panel. 10. The decision of the judges is final. Any award not merited may be withheld. 11. No exhibit may be removed before 4 pm on Saturday, September 27, 2014. All exhibits must be removed by 5 pm. 12. Exhibits not claimed by 5 pm will be removed and stored in the Board Room until they can be picked up. Ribault Garden Club cannot be responsible for property not claimed in a timely manner. Exhibitors are responsible for carefully reading the Rules of the Schedule. THE SCHEDULE IS THE LAW OF THE SHOW! 3 “GIVE MY REGARDS TO BROADWAY” DIVISION I: DESIGN Design Division Rules 1. Entry in the Design Division is open to all members of the Ribault Garden Club and the National Garden Clubs. 2. All designs must be the work of one exhibitor. An exhibitor may enter as many classes as available, but may enter only one design per class. If designer is unable to fulfill assignment, it is the responsibility of the designer to provide a substitute. Design Consultants may not enter designs in the section in which they consult. 3. The following may not be used as part of any design: the American Flag, artificial plant material, and/or plant material that has been treated to alter its exterior appearance is only allowed in a dried state. 4. Exhibitors must list plant materials used on a 3” x 5” unlined card which will be provided. A brief interpretation of the design is required. 5. Landscapes and scenes are not allowed. 6. Plant material used in designs need not have been grown by exhibitor. 7. Each Circle of the Ribault Garden Club is urged to enter six designs, if possible. 8. It is the responsibility of the exhibitor to keep all plant materials fresh for the duration of the show. The show committee reserves the right to remove exhibits if they detract from the appearance of the show. 9. Designs shall be entered on Thursday, September 25th between 4 and 7 pm. No exhibitor, except Flower Show Committee Chairmen, may remain in the room after 7pm. 10. The Design Consultant must approve the entry before the exhibitor leaves the floor. After being approved, the design cannot be changed. No designs will be accepted after the above deadline. Designers may refresh plant materials Friday before 9 am, but can make no other adjustments. 11. Complete definitions for each design may be found in the Handbook for Flower Shows, 2007. The Design Scale of Points may be reviewed on page 303 of the Handbook for Flower Shows, 2007. Judges are requested to make written comments on all exhibits except those awarded blue ribbons. 4 “GIVE MY REGARDS TO BROADWAY” Design Awards NGC Top Exhibitor Awards In order to be eligible for a NGC Top Exhibitor Award, a design must be a blue ribbon winner and score 95 or more. However, the awards may be withheld if the judges determine there is no design worthy. The NGC DESIGNER’S CHOICE AWARD may be given in: Section A - Designer has complete freedom in selection of components, but must include some plant material. Plant material may be all fresh, all dried, or both. The NGC TABLE ARTISTRY AWARD may be given in: Section B - All components chosen must be suitable for use on a dining table. The NGC TRI-COLOR AWARD may be given in: Section C - NO Dried Wood! Design is staged on half a six foot table, skirted in black. The Background panel is 48”x 32” x 24” deep. The Background panel is 48”x32”x24” deep. Background and underlay provided and decorated by designer. 6 “GIVE MY REGARDS TO BROADWAY” Class 2: “Shall We Dance?” from the play The King and I A creative three-dimensional panel design where the self-support is an integral part of the design. To be staged on a black pedestal 40” in height and 18” in diameter. Underlay provided by designer. Class 3: “Stars” from the Play Les Miserable A large creative design staged on the floor. Design is to originate on the floor and is not merely a design staged on a pedestal. Space allocated is 36” square. An underlay on the floor will be provided by the committee. 7 “GIVE MY REGARDS TO BROADWAY” SECTION B “Favorite Things” Eligible for TABLE ARTISTRY AWARD All components chosen must be suitable for use on a dining table. Class 4: “Everything’s Coming up Roses” from the play Gypsy Exhibition Table Type 1 staged on half a six foot table, skirted in black. The Background panel is 48”x 32” x 24” deep. Background panel and underlay provided and decorated by designer. Must include a decorative unit (floral design). 8 “GIVE MY REGARDS TO BROADWAY” Class 5: “Come to the Cabaret My Friend” from the play Cabaret Exhibition Table Type 2 staged on half a six foot table, skirted in black. May not contain a decorative unit, but must include some plant material placed where needed to carry rhythm, repeat color/s and overall degree of formality. The Background panel is 48”x 32” x 24” deep. Background panel and underlay provided and decorated by designer. Class 6: “Some Enchanted Evening” from the play South Pacific A Functional semi-formal table set for two, staged individually on a card table. Decorative unit placed in center of table for Functional mode. Tables be skirted with a black cloth. Each table is 32” square. Designer will provide table covering. HB p 217. 9 “GIVE MY REGARDS TO BROADWAY” SECTION C “Something Bad” Eligible for TRI-COLOR AWARD NO Dried Wood Design is staged on half a six foot table, skirted in black. The Background panel is 48”x 32” x 24” deep. Background panel and underlay provided and decorated by designer Class 7: “The Music of the Night” from the play Phantom of the Opera A Creative Stabile Design fixed in position at the base, but having implied motion. All components used must add to the feeling of impending motion. HB p 209 10 “GIVE MY REGARDS TO BROADWAY” Class 8: “It’s a Hard Knock Life” from the play Annie A creative vibratile design characterized by vibration and unobtrusive sound. Note: An attendant must be present during the show since viewers will be allowed to activate the sound. To ensure design is not disrupted when the sound is made, the designer will provide instructions as to how this will be done on a separate card. HB p. 212 Class 9: “Don’t Rain on my Parade” from the play Funny Girl A creative underwater design having components, including some staged in water, to create interest. Those components submerged in water must contribute to the overall design and not merely be stems and or mechanics. HB p.212 11 “GIVE MY REGARDS TO BROADWAY” DIVISION II: HORTICULTURE Horticulture Division Rules Horticulture Classes are open to All Amateur Gardeners 1. All horticulture exhibits must be fresh and grown by and in the possession of the exhibitor for at least three (3) months prior to showing. 2. Exhibitor may make more than one entry per class if each entry is a different variety, cultivar, type or color. 3. Specimens must be labeled with the correct botanical name (genus and species). Common names may be included. 4. Exhibits of self-multiplying plants are permitted. Only one plant per container, unless otherwise specified. 5. Plants should be show-worthy, well groomed, and in clean pots. No wiring, oiling, plant shine, or artificial coloring is permitted. Double potting is allowed. Inner pot must not be visible. Mulch of fine rock or pebbles is permitted only on cacti and bromeliad specimens. 6. Cut specimens may not exceed 18” in length with the exception of sansevieria. Arboreal specimens must be between 18” and 30” in length and must be hard wood. Specimens may not have any foliage below the water line. Wedging with an inconspicuous plug of plastic wrap (provided) is permitted, if necessary. Containers for cut specimens are provided by the committee. 7. Plants in Sections G, H, I, J, K, L, and M must be in containers no larger than 10” in diameter. Plants in containers larger than 10” in diameter will be displayed in the Patio Section O and must be placed by the exhibitor. Patio containers may not exceed 14” in diameter. 8. Collections must consist of at least five (5) different cut specimens exhibited in (5) different containers or five (5) different container grown plants exhibited in individual containers. Specimens within a collection may consist of one family, plants with like characteristic, different types of species within a genus, different cultivars within a genus or species, or five different cut branches. Exhibitor to provide containers. 9. Subdivision of classes is by the discretion of Horticulture Chairman only. 12 “GIVE MY REGARDS TO BROADWAY” Horticulture Awards NGC Top Exhibitor Awards Top Exhibitor Awards can only be given to exhibits that score 95 or higher. Correct botanical information must be provided. The NGC AWARD OF HORTICULTURAL EXCELLENCE is given to the horticulture exhibit which is judged as the finest in the entire Horticulture Division. Youth exhibitors must have been in possession of container grown plants for at least 60 days. Plants in Combination Planters and/or Hanging Plants with multiple stems must have been grown together for at least three weeks. 2. The use of plant material is encouraged whenever appropriate. Educational information is of high value and in conformance to NGC objectives. 3. Exhibits must occupy a minimum of 18 square feet of surface area. 4. Presentation and creativity are also judged.
