A CAMPER'S WORST FEARS
(Tune: "A Few of My Favorite Things" / Lyrics: Clare Mansfield)
Rain drops on Cub scouts and wet smelly gym socks.
Tent’s dark and crowded and sleeping on sharp rocks.
Small biting insects that fly in my ears;
These are a few of a camper's worst fears.
Building a fire with wet wood and matches.
Lighting the kindling that never quite catches.
Tryin' to endure the sarcasm and jeers,
These are a few of a camper's worst fears.
Chorus:
When the food stinks, and my back kinks,
And my patience has run dry,
I simply remember my snug bed at home
And, then I begin....to cry!
Running to catch up, I fall down the hillside.
Piles of wet laundry that smells like a skunk died.
Listenin' to night sounds that no-one else hears,
These are a few of a camper's worst fears.
Pond scum and algae in my swimming hole.
Hot tempers flaring and fights with my best pal.
Blisters and rashes for me and my peers,
These are a few of a camper's worst fears.
(Chorus)

Do your ears fall off
when you give a great big cough?
Do they lie there on the ground
Or bounce up at every sound?
Can you stick them in your pocket
Just like ol’ Davy Crocket?
Do your ears fall off?

OH, MY DARLIN’ CLEMENTINE
In a cavern, in the canyon, excavating for a mine
Lived a miner forty-niner, and his daughter, Clementine.
Chorus:
Oh, my darlin’, oh, my darlin’, Oh, my darlin’Clementine.
You are lost and gone forever, dreadful sorry, Clementine
Light she was and like a fairy,
And her shoes were number nine
Packing boxes without topses
Were the shoes for Clementine
(Chorus)
She drove ducklings to the water
Every mornin’ just at nine.
Hit her foot against a splinter
Fell into the foaming brine
(Chorus)
Ruby lips above the water
Blowing bubbles soft and fine.
But, alas, I was no swimmer,
So I lost my Clementine.
(Chorus)
Now you children, learn the moral
Of this little tale of mine
CPR and swimmin’ lessons
Would have saved my Clementine
(Chorus)

OTHER DAY I MET A BEAR (THE) (a sing-after-me
song)
C
F
The other day (echo), I met a bear (echo),
G
C
A great big bear (echo), Away out there (echo)
(Repeat each line separately, then all 4 lines together)
He looked at me
I looked at him;
He sized up me
I sized up him.
He said to me,
“Why don't you run?
I see you ain't
Got any gun.”
I said to him,
“That's a good idea.
So come on feet,
Away from here!”
And so I ran,
Away from there.
But right behind,
Me was the bear.
And then I see,
Ahead of me,
A great big tree
Oh, glory be!
The lowest branch
Was ten feet up,
I'd have to jump
And trust my luck!
And so I jumped,
Into the air.
But I missed that branch,
Away up there.
Now don't you fret,
Now don't you frown.
Cause I caught that branch,
On my way down.
The moral to,
This story is,
Don't talk to bears,
While in the woods.
That's it, that's all,
There ain't no more.
Unless I meet,
That bear once more.
(OR unless I meet, a dinosaur)
(Another ending:)
Next time I saw,
That great big bear,
He was a rug,
On the bathroom floor.

Lived in a tree (straight line down)
She sailed across (ocean wave motion in front of body with one

The seven seas (number 7 with your finger, then make a "C" with

And took with her (throw a sack over your shoulder)
A rick a’ bamboo! (trace a wavy figure in front of you going down,
bend knees as you go)
A rick a’ bamboo (same as before)
Now what is that? (point hands)
It's something made (bang one fist on top of the other)
By the Princess Pat (Egyptian pose)
It's red and gold ("twirl" one arm down by your hip)
And purple too (flip hands as if you were saying "Oh my gosh!")
That's why it's called (cup hands in front of mouth, shout)
A rick a’ bamboo! (same as before)

AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL
Words by Katharine Lee Bates / Melody by Samuel Ward
O beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee,
And crown thy good with brotherhood,
From sea to shining sea!
O beautiful for pilgrim feet,
Whose stern impassioned stress.
A thoroughfare for freedom beat,
Across the wilderness.
America! America!
God mend thine every flaw,
Confirm thy soul in self-control,
Thy liberty in law.

In liberating strife,
Who more than self their country loved,
And mercy more than life.

May God thy gold refine.
Till all success be nobleness,
And ev’ry gain divine.
O beautiful for patriot dream
That sees beyond the years.
Thine alabaster cities gleam
Undimmed by human tears.
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee,
And crown thy good with brotherhood,
From sea to shining sea!

BATTLE HYMN OF THE REPUBLIC
Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord:
He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are
stored;
He hath loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword:
His truth is marching on.
Chorus:
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
His truth is marching on.
He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never call retreat;
He is sifting out the hearts of men before His judgment-seat:
Oh, be swift, my soul, to answer Him! Be jubilant, my feet!
Our God is marching on.
(Chorus)
In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea,
With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me:
As He died to make men holy, let us die to make men free,
While God is marching on.
(Chorus)
GOD BLESS AMERICA

Tune: Battle Hymn of the Republic
I love this great America,
The land that God has blessed,
Where the hope that stirs the hearts of men
Will never be suppressed.
Through the flame of faith came forth a nation
Choice above the rest,
THIS GREAT AMERICA!
Chorus:
Glory to the land of freedom
Glory to the land of freedom
Glory to the land of freedom
I LOVE AMERICA!
I love this great America,
The land of liberty,
For I know the price of freedom
Countless others paid for me
Do we hear their call to carry on
And serve as valiantly?
THIS GREAT AMERICA!
(Chorus)
May all men be united
BY the bonds of brotherhood,
May we learn to love each other
For in every man is good.

MY COUNTRY, 'TIS OF THEE
by Rev. Samuel F. Smith
My country, 'tis of Thee,
Sweet Land of Liberty
Of thee I sing;
Land where my fathers died,
Land of the pilgrims' pride,
From every mountain side
Let Freedom ring.
My native country, thee,
Land of the noble free,
Thy name I love;
I love thy rocks and rills,
Thy woods and templed hills,
My heart with rapture thrills
Like that above.
Let music swell the breeze,
And ring from all the trees
Sweet Freedom's song;
Let mortal tongues awake;
Let all that breathe partake;
Let rocks their silence break,
The sound prolong.

STAR SPANGLED BANNER (THE)
Oh, say can you see by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars thru the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave,
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
THIS LAND IS YOUR LAND
Words and music by Woody Guthrie
Chorus:
This land is your land, this land is my land
From California, to the New York Island
From the redwood forest, to the gulf stream waters
This land was made for you and me
As I was walking a ribbon of highway
I saw above me an endless skyway
I saw below me a golden valley
This land was made for you and me
(Chorus)
I've roamed and rambled and I've followed my footsteps
To the sparkling sands of her diamond deserts
And all around me a voice was sounding
This land was made for you and me
(Chorus)
The sun comes shining as I was strolling
The wheat fields waving and the dust clouds rolling
The fog was lifting a voice come chanting
This land was made for you and me

And with the girls be handy.
Father and I went down to camp,

And there we saw the men and boys
As thick as hasty pudding.

There was Captain Washington
Upon a slapping stallion
A-giving orders to his men

YOU’RE A GRAND OLD FLAG
by George M. Cohan
You're a grand old flag, you're a high flying flag
And forever in peace may you wave.
You're the emblem of, the land I love,
The home of the free and the brave.
Ev'ry heart beats true, 'neath the Red, White and Blue,
Where there's never a boast or brag.
But should auld acquaintance be forgot,
Keep your eye on the grand old flag.

Amazing grace, how sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me!

Day is done, gone the sun,
From the sea, from the hills, from the sky.
All is well, safely rest, God is nigh.
Fading light, dims the sight,
And a star gems the sky, gleaming bright.
From afar, drawing nigh, falls the night.
Thanks and praise for our days
'Neath the sun, ‘neath the stars, 'neath the sky.
As we go, this we know, God is nigh.
Sun has set, shadows come.
Time has fled, scouts must go to their beds.
Always true to the promise that they made.
Then good night, peaceful night,
Till the light of the dawn shineth bright;
God is near, do not fear; friend, good night.

Jokes & Run-Ons
Run-ons are great to get the audience’s attention or
participation. Run-ons can be used to interrupt the speaker
(planned), they can be used at the beginning or end, or
between skits/songs—they are fun ways to play-on-words, be
silly, or keep the audience’s interest. Run-ons are all scripted
and the MC should know and approve what run-ons you are
going to.

Skits
Tips for successful skits:
1- Keep them short - never longer than 3 to 5 minutes so that they
can be easily memorized.
2- Homemade skits or songs may seem funny to the writers but
often are not funny to the audience.
3- Use cue cards and scripts if you need to. Rehearse until everyone
is comfortable and has memorized their parts.
4- Everyone has to speak or sing loudly and clearly.
5- Avoid gross, vulgar, offensive or un-Scout-like topics or content.
6- A "volunteer" is never chosen at random from the audience. The
"volunteer" is pre-selected person, a "shill" or "plant."
7- Have a Master of Ceremonies to keep skits and songs moving.
8- Keep your program fast paced and get everyone involved!
There are so many great and fun skits!
To keep this booklet small, I’ve listed some websites that have
hundreds of skits for whatever type of skit you might need:
