Complete the following assignment and submit your work to your teacher.

Introduction: You will be researching the different areas of the grade 10 science course
to investigate how technology, chemicals, and/or environmental factors can affect and
influence you as a human. There are four parts in the culminating activity - biology,
chemistry, earth and space science, and physics. You will need to complete only two of
these parts. You get to choose. Remember to complete the written portion of your
research in your own words.
Part 1 - Biology: Tissues, Organs, and Systems
Task: Research only one of the following technologies used in Canada. Write a one
page report in sentence form and in your own words. Check for spelling and grammar
after completing your summary and add visuals related to your research topic.
Questions: Answer one of the following questions:
a. Describe how ultrasound is used to monitor fetal development.
b. Describe the ways that nuclear isotopes (nuclear medicine) can be helpful to the
human body and some of the risks involved in this technology.

Part 3 - Earth and Space Science: Earth's Dynamic Climate
Task: You are representing your school at the next Earth Summit and you are required
to create a speech to represent the youth of Canada.
Background:
The Earth Summit is a United Nations conference with the purpose of stopping the
destruction of natural resources that cannot be replaced. The individuals involved with
the Earth Summit are finding ways to reduce pollution. The main focus of your speech
should be on climate change.
Some questions to consider while producing your speech are:
a. What are some of the factors that are changing our climate? (e.g., greenhouse
gases)
b. What evidence do we have of climate change?
c. How might climate change affect Canada in the future?
d. What has been done in the past to protect our environment? (e.g., Earth Summit in
1992 in Rio, Kyoto Protocol)
e. What are some of the things we can do to decrease the effects of climate change
in the future?

Task: In this part of the culminating activity you will research some of the ways light is
used in technology and then display the information on a poster. Word Perfect,
Microsoft Word, Photoshop Elements, Microsoft Publisher, and Smart Ideas are tools
that can help you create a poster.
Instructions:
1. Research three examples of light technology in our society (e.g. incandescent
light bulbs, LEDs (light emitting diodes), transmission holograms, light
microscopes, etc.)
2. Find a visual(s) for each of the examples of light technology that you have
researched.
3. Display the visual on a poster and use word processing to briefly describe how this
technology works. Place the description under each of the visuals on the poster.
4. Write your name at the bottom of your poster.
